Clinically, elevated serum levels (>5 μg/mL) serve as a biomarker for bacterial infections (e.g., tuberculosis, meningitis), monocytic leukemia (due to malignant cell release), and renal tubular dysfunction (reduced reabsorption), while decreased levels correlate with immunosuppression. Detection relies on high-sensitivity ELISA (limit: ~0.5 ng/mL), though sample handling requires rigorous centrifugation and -80°C storage to prevent degradation.
