The idea is to play your instrument with the UpMute and use the least amount of effort to produce the tone. In other words, be extremely relaxed and don’t use too much air. You will know you have it right when you feel very little back pressure from the mute. Then remove the mute and play your instrument with the same amount of effort and you will be amazed at how much easier it is to play and how full and resonant your sound is.
