The celebrated 'School Prints' series, an initiative of Brenda Rawnsley, aimed to expose schoolchildren to the best art of the day. Specially-commissioned images were produced by artists including Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and many more, specifically to be hung in schools. They were printed by the Baynard Press and made available to schools an minimal costs.
This Cooper work is one of our favourites of the series. Thanks to the bold colouring of the Striped Barbados Lily at the centre, it loses none of its impact for being a lithograph rather than an oil painting. It also has a distinct 1940s flavour in the forms and colours whilst also clarly recalling Old Master paintings.
