Master of Genre-Blending

SMITH, Patti. Early Work: 1970-1979. London: Plexus. 1994.

8vo. Original cloth backed boards with spine lettered in silver; illustrated dust jacket with B/W photograph of the author by Robert Mapplethorpe; pp. x, [4], 177, [3], photographic illustrations in text; very mild scuffing to head and tail of spine; otherwise fine.

First, signed edition of the early works, some previously unpublished, of an icon and master of genre blending.

"All the works gathered for this volume were written in the Seventies … which we assaulted - blurring and expanding the perimeters of love, consciousness and remorse. Driven with the collective hope to raise aspects of art, poetry, rock n' roll, even charity that had not been raised before…" (p. 9).

Notorious for fusing her poetry with her music, the legendary Patti Smith would release her record Piss Factory in 1974 which many heralded one of the most influential pieces, and anthem, of the pre punk-rock scene of 1970s New York. Early Work: 1970-1979 comprises fragments of writing spanning the crucial decade during which she made a cult impact on America's undergound scene and began a legacy of breaking boundaries in art. It also contains obscure poems as well as prose from her chapbooks, Seventh Heaven, Ha! Ha! Houdini and Witt as well as her iconic Babel, demonstrating both the meditation and rebellion within her creations.

Patti Smith would go on to write Just Kids, a memoir of the often turbulent but ever enduring relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe (whose photographs are featured here) and their united experience of poverty and artistry up until Mapplethorpe's premature death in 1989. It would go on to win the 2010 National Book Award for Nonfiction. She describes Mapplethorpe's legacy: "Much has been said about Robert, and more will be added. Young men will adopt his gait. Young girls will wear white dresses and mourn his curls. He will be condemned and adored. His excesses damned or romanticized. In the end, truth will be found in his work, the corporeal body of the artist”. Throughout, the text is complemented by beautiful, intimate photographic illustrations by Judy Linn, Edward Maxey and more.

The more recent writings of Patti Smith, Wool-Gathering (1992), M Train (2015) and Devotion (2017), to name but a few, have been published to substantial critical acclaim.

Thick, soft, perfect for my service dog to lay on in restaurants, etc.
Color: Blue, Style: 1/2 Inch
I bought this for my service dog to lay on in restaurants, etc. It's super thick and soft. I cut it in half and I'm using the other half for my dog to lay on in the car. Excellent quality and I love the carry strap.

Comfortable and thick mat that’s great for workouts at home
Color: Black, Style: 1/2 Inch, Color: Black, Style: 1/2 Inch
I picked up this Amazon Basics extra thick exercise mat for home workouts, and it’s been a solid addition. The thickness is the first thing you notice—it provides good cushioning, especially for exercises where you’re on your knees, elbows, or back. The surface has enough grip to keep you from slipping during most movements, whether you're doing stretching, core work, or basic workouts. It also stays in place pretty well on the floor without sliding around too much. The mat rolls out flat easily and comes with a strap, which makes it convenient to store or carry if needed. It’s lightweight enough to move around but still feels durable. It’s not a high-end studio mat, but for everyday workouts at home, it does exactly what you need it to do. Pros: • Extra thickness provides good cushioning • Comfortable for floor exercises • Lightweight and easy to store • Good value for the price Cons: • Slight compression over time with heavy use • Grip is good but not premium-level Overall, this is a great budget-friendly mat for home workouts, stretching, or basic fitness routines.

Maximum joint comfort and durability
Color: Pink, Style: 1/2 Inch
I absolutely loved the color, and it offers incredible cushioning without sacrificing stability during balance poses. It is dense, doesn't lose its shape, and springs back instantly. The materials are high-quality, and it doesn't have that strong plastic smell that others often have. It is worth every penny for the comfort it provides.

PLUSH! Fabulous yoga mat!
Color: Black, Style: 1/2 Inch
SO comfortable! It feels like a soft memory foam padding. I use it for several exercise classes and it is great for all of my needs! I love the strap it comes with to keep it rolled up in between classes and the ability to carry it anywhere.

very comfortable and thicker than a regular yoga mat
Color: Pink, Style: 1/2 Inch
This yoga mat is very comfortable and thicker than a regular yoga mat. The quality is excellent, and it doesn't have that strong rubber smell that many mats have. I'm very happy with it!
