The grain is complex and is oriented on the diagonal through the block, exposing sweeping curves in the grain on the faces. The grain is complex and is oriented on the diagonal through the block, exposing sweeping curves in the grain on the faces. It's all heartwood with attractive contrasting bands of darker and lighter heartwood colors, including some surprisingly light colored bands near the core. This piece has been air-dried to 10-12% moisture content. This block does have a few hairline cracks and one that is small but open. I recommend treating those cracks with thin or medium CA glue prior to turning. See close-up photos. |
