THE C-LEVEL GUIDE TO SUCCEEDING WITH LEAN

"With 30 years of accumulated experience, Art Byrne is one of the rare few people who can speak with authority about the pitfalls of fi nancial measurement systems, the importance of respect for people, the power of Lean in the marketplace, and the leverage from organizing people around value streams. When he writes 'Go to the Gemba and Run Your Kaizen,' we must take heed." -- MASAAKI IMAI, bestselling author of Kaizen and Gemba Kaizen

"In this wonderful and important book, Byrne shows us that Lean management, understood and practiced correctly, consistently delivers spectacular results." -- BOB EMILIANI, author, Better Thinking, Better Results, and Professor, Connecticut State University

"Art Byrne provides real-world examples of how he exhibited the wisdom and courage to do the right thing, improving work practices at all levels of the organization to deliver the right results for all stakeholders. Which comes first, the wisdom or the courage? Read The Lean Turnaround to find out." -- JOHN SHOOK, Chairman and CEO, Lean Enterprise Institute

"Lean is the closest thing to magic I have experienced in my 40 years in business. I recommend Lean and this book to everyone responsible for the performance of a business, particularly those in private equity like me, where leverage magnifies the importance of cash." -- JOHN CHILDS, founder and CEO, of J. W. Childs Associates L.P.

"A must-read for any leader interested in understanding the strategic advantages from focusing on activities that add value to the customer experience." -- GARY S. KAPLAN, MD, Chairman and CEO of the Virginia Mason Health System

Lean isn't just for manufacturing anymore . . .

Few business leaders in the world have applied Lean strategy as successfully as Art Byrne has--and none has the ability to explain how to do it with such succinctness and clarity.

Famous for turning around the wire management company Wiremold, where he rethought every aspect of operations from the customer's standpoint--and got everyone else in the company to do likewise--Byrne has successfully implemented Lean strategies in more than 30 companies in 14 different countries.

In The Lean Turnaround, this legendary business leader shares everything he has learned during his remarkable career and shows how anyone can achieve similar results. His primary message is this: Lean strategy isn't just for manufacturing. In fact, Byrne is using this very approach in his present position at a private equity firm.

Whatever type of company you run, Lean can be used to improve virtually every aspect of operations, from training and leading employees to accounting and payroll issues. The Lean Turnaround explains all the ins and outs of applying Lean strategy to:

  • Eliminate waste in every value-added operation
  • Deliver consistent value to customers
  • Stimulate growth and add jobs
  • Increase wealth for all your stakeholders
  • Build a company culture of continuous improvement (kaizen)

Instead of attempting to get customers to conform to your way of doing things--which is, sadly, what most managers are taught to do--you need to configure your company to be responsive to the customers. This is at the core of Byrne's method--and it always works.

Great price with good quality - Just be prepared to iron it.
Fit Type: Slim Fit, Color: Grey, Size: X-Large
Nice shirt, especially for the price. You will need to iron it to get the wrinkles out, as I have a professional steamer, and it still looks unfinished even when using it. If you iron and starch it, it will look very nice, and it does not wrinkle as badly as I thought it would. The fit is perfect, and the softness, color, and feel are nice as well. This shirt can go from casual to dress right out of the closet (ironed, of course).

Count on shrinkage when choosing your size.
Fit Type: Slim Fit, Color: White, Size: X-Large
I bought this shirt earlier and got an XL. It came and it fit perfectly. Couldn't believe it, but then I wondered what it would look like after one washing. It shrank. Not so bad that I couldn't wear it, but it no longer looked "perfect" and I I don't dare put on 5 pounds. But I liked the shirt overall, so I went back and ordered another, this time an XXL. It came, I tried it on and while it worked, it was slightly larger than I wanted. Instead of returning it, I washed it, and like the first, it shrunk, but it shrunk to a size that looked good and was comfortable. Lesson: you might want to go one size larger than you would ordinarily get, wear it to see how it fits, and if it seems too large, wash it and see if it makes a difference. The first shirt I would give 4 stars because shrinkage took away from it, but I'd give the second 5 stars because even more so after washing, the fit was very nice.

Good concept, details need some work.
Fit Type: Slim Fit, Color: Grey, Size: Small
Let's start with the positives. The quality of the cloth is great, it's a heavier cotton, but feels soft and durable. The overall slim fit cut was great too. The shoulders were a tiny bit too boxy for me personally, but I didn't wash it to see if the shirt would shrink and solve that issue. The problem with this shirt is that it doesn't get the details right. It's almost like they just took a regular shirt and decided to produce it in a slim fit instead, without tweaking anything else. It's slightly too long to be left untucked, and for a cloth this heavy, it's not really something that you would really want to wear tucked in. I also find it weird that a slim fit shirt would have a box pleat on the back, since the whole point of a slim fit shirt is for a cleaner look on a trimmer guy. Finally, I like the button-down collar, but would consider hiding the buttons on the back of the collar so that you get a cleaner look. Unfortunately, these misses on the details make this shirt seem outdated. Other than the slim cut, it reminds me of something you might see from the 1990s, along with double pleated chinos. Overall, doesn't seem like a good match for a younger, more stylish demographic that might want to wear a slim fit cut. Despite the great price, I'm definitely returning this one.

Very nice winter shirt.
Fit Type: Slim Fit, Color: Blue, Size: Large
These shirts are beyond what I expected. They’re thicker than I thought but not being too heavy. They wear well and they also wash up very well in permanent press and I dry them on permanent press also. No problem with wrinkles. I just take them out of the dryer and hang them up and they look great.
