The AC-119K had several major improvements incorporated into the design. Armament included the four 7.62 miniguns of the "Shadow" but added two 20 mm cannons. Two pods housed General Electric J85 jet engines with 2850 lbs. thrust each. The J85s allowed the aircraft to takeoff at a much larger gross weight of 80,400 lbs. -- more than 15,000 lbs. higher than the AC-119G. The "Stinger" also had a significantly upgraded avionics capability. A forward looking, terrain avoidance radar and a Forward-Looking Infrared Radar (FLIR) system were installed. The Night Observation Device, automatic flare launcher and 1.5 million candlepower illuminators of the AC-119G were retained. A beacon tracking radar system was initially installed but removed in December 1970.
