GULIK, Robert van. The Willow Pattern: A Chinese Detective Story. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons. 1965.

8vo. Original teal cloth, lettered in dark blue to spine with a small illustration to upper board, dark blue illustrated endpapers, illustrated dust jacket with printed price of $3.50 to front flap; pp. [8], 184, with 15 woodblock-style illustrations by the author; jacket lightly sunned to spine with very faint staining visible to rear, minimal wear to edges, spine tips lightly pushed, mild toning to edges of text block; an attractive copy, near fine.

First US edition, exquisitely illustrated by the author.

Drawing on the conventions of traditional Chinese detective fiction, Van Gulik weaves three apparently unrelated crimes: the death of a wealthy merchant found in his study, a gruesome discovery at the foot of a staircase, and the brutal murder of a young woman. As the investigation unfolds, Judge Dee uncovers the complex connections binding the cases together.

The character of Judge Dee is based on the historical Tang-dynasty magistrate Di Renjie (seventh century). The Willow Pattern is set during the later phase of Dee’s career when he is serving as President of the Metropolitan Court, allowing Van Gulik to explore both judicial intrigue and court politics.

First published in Dutch as a serial in De Telegraaf throughout 1964, the English and American editions followed in 1965.

Evers, p. 57.

Awesome price for quality balls
Color: Four colors, Size: 5cm (ball only)
These balls are super bouncy and durable. My dog loves them and for the price these are totally worth it! I think they are as durable as nerf balls and equal in size, and much cheaper!

Rope comes out at the slightest force. Pointless tug toy!
Color: Four colors, Size: 6cm (with rope)
If your dog pulls on these (and why wouldn’t he?), the rope immediately comes out. Turns out they just fuse the ends of the nylon rope together, which is no match for a dog playing tug. Any dog, any level of pulling will dismantle these. We’ve managed to reinsert the rope to a couple of these and KNOT it, which gives you a shorter rope but a toy that can withstand some play. But if I had wanted a DIY toy, I’d have used the balls and rope I already own.

Not for super chewers!
Color: Four colors, Size: 5cm (with rope), Color: Four colors, Size: 5cm (with rope)
These rope ball toys arrived today. My poodle puppy loves rope ball toys and playing tug of war. These didn’t last 10 minutes. For context, she is 1 y.o., 30 lbs., is not teething & has her adult teeth. She did this on her own- we were not playing tug of war at the time the toy fell apart. At least there are 3 more in the package & when the rope is done, we’ll still have the balls to play with.
