THESE ARTHUR RADEBAUGH PRINTS ARE EXCLUSIVE TO OUR COMPANY, THE GRAND REVIEW.

The story of futurist illustrator Arthur Radebaugh is long and delightfully multi faceted.  It is well told in the recently completed documentary CLOSER THAN WE THINK, by filmmaker Brett Ryan Bonowicz which made its well received debut at the Other World Austin festival.

My role, as an historian and rabid collector of unusual imagery, was to be in the right place at the right moment to acquire a lost portfolio of his work, and to recognize that here was someone worth snatching from obscurity and savoring every morsel of information we could find about this undeservedly obscure imagineer.

With my associate Jared Rosenbaum, we curated an exhibit that took form at exactly the pace we could fill in the blanks.  The resulting exhibition was an international hit, thanks to what was the brand new internet, and with the early interest and therefor world wide heads up given the rediscovered Radebaugh by Popular Science on line.

The prints here at The Grand Review are selections from that exhibit, called RADEBAUGH, THE FUTURE WE WERE PROMISED.  The show traveled from Philadelphia  to The Utopiales Festival in Nantes, which proved a wonderful adventure for me, my wife, Jared and his fiance.

When it returned to the States, Jared Rosenbaum recurated the exhibit and took it to Detroit where it was given the honor of serving as the inaugural exhibit for the brand new facility for The National Automotive History Collection.

Next year, Chicago based design history author Tim Lapetino will present a book on the story of our favorite futurist, and we’re looking forward to it.

Over the next year, we will add a few more prints to the collection, mostly obscure and sometimes unacknowledged rarities we discovered and stashed away over the past decade.

Now, we are very happy to present this modest collection of extraordinary works by the rediscovered Arthur Radebaugh.

Enjoy!!!

A NOTE ON OUR PROCESS, OUR CHOICES AND THE QUALITY OF THE GRAPHIC CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT GOES INTO OUR PRINTS.

Every print we deem exciting enough to present to the public via our Etsy store or available here at our studio has gone through a number of steps.  The first of those is always discovering and falling in love with an obscure image, always an original that we can hold in our hands.  That image is speaking to us, sometime screaming “Don’t leave me here.  See what I am, what I was, what I can be, what I SHOULD be!”

There is a real sense of excitement involved, and a great many smiles and knowing grins when we make that deal and bring that ancient print, that battered photo, that scrap of ephemera that contains some scrap of genius from an unknown commercial artist home with us, knowing already how we mean to approach its restoration.

There is the heady promise of a further hunt just as real as what drags a weekend fisherman out of bed at 3AM to work a favorite brook as we start our research, looking for that great backstory, and both ready and willing to tumble down as many rabbit holes as are revealed to us to get that story.

Then there is a meticulous digital restoration that is as often as much fun as riding a vintage Moto Guzzi on a winding coastal road.  I don’t care if that sounds crazy, it really is like jumping in the saddle!  So many choices, so many chances to take to subtly or spectacularly give new life to otherwise permanently obscure images.

This dedication and the ongoing rush of joy in the accomplishment of it, and the opportunity to share the results in our studio and here on Etsy, is the fire of passion that keeps these engines roaring. We make every effort to ensure our customers are not just satisfied but thrilled, and we happily stand 100% behind our work.

Exactly what I expected plus fast delivery. Amazon essentials offer great value for the price. Note: I wish #Amazon would give points for reviewing items as an incentive just as #AliExpress does.

Count on shrinkage when choosing your size.
Fit Type: Slim Fit, Color: White, Size: X-Large
I bought this shirt earlier and got an XL. It came and it fit perfectly. Couldn't believe it, but then I wondered what it would look like after one washing. It shrank. Not so bad that I couldn't wear it, but it no longer looked "perfect" and I I don't dare put on 5 pounds. But I liked the shirt overall, so I went back and ordered another, this time an XXL. It came, I tried it on and while it worked, it was slightly larger than I wanted. Instead of returning it, I washed it, and like the first, it shrunk, but it shrunk to a size that looked good and was comfortable. Lesson: you might want to go one size larger than you would ordinarily get, wear it to see how it fits, and if it seems too large, wash it and see if it makes a difference. The first shirt I would give 4 stars because shrinkage took away from it, but I'd give the second 5 stars because even more so after washing, the fit was very nice.

Good concept, details need some work.
Fit Type: Slim Fit, Color: Grey, Size: Small
Let's start with the positives. The quality of the cloth is great, it's a heavier cotton, but feels soft and durable. The overall slim fit cut was great too. The shoulders were a tiny bit too boxy for me personally, but I didn't wash it to see if the shirt would shrink and solve that issue. The problem with this shirt is that it doesn't get the details right. It's almost like they just took a regular shirt and decided to produce it in a slim fit instead, without tweaking anything else. It's slightly too long to be left untucked, and for a cloth this heavy, it's not really something that you would really want to wear tucked in. I also find it weird that a slim fit shirt would have a box pleat on the back, since the whole point of a slim fit shirt is for a cleaner look on a trimmer guy. Finally, I like the button-down collar, but would consider hiding the buttons on the back of the collar so that you get a cleaner look. Unfortunately, these misses on the details make this shirt seem outdated. Other than the slim cut, it reminds me of something you might see from the 1990s, along with double pleated chinos. Overall, doesn't seem like a good match for a younger, more stylish demographic that might want to wear a slim fit cut. Despite the great price, I'm definitely returning this one.

Very nice winter shirt.
Fit Type: Slim Fit, Color: Blue, Size: Large
These shirts are beyond what I expected. They’re thicker than I thought but not being too heavy. They wear well and they also wash up very well in permanent press and I dry them on permanent press also. No problem with wrinkles. I just take them out of the dryer and hang them up and they look great.

Amazon Essentials Mens shirt review - Good shirt, great value.
Fit Type: Slim Fit, Color: Grey, Size: X-Large
First, this is Oxford. This is a tough fabric that looks a little like pinpoint and feels a little like flannel. That is, it does not have the sheen of a dress shirt and is not as thick and soft as flannel. It hits a nice spot in between. The fabric is soft enough and thick enough to wear casually in the heat of summer. (It is cooler than a very thin and very cheap shirt due to it's absorbancy.) The fabric appears and feels to be quality. The cut is good for me. It is tailored enough to look good tucked in and roomy enough for work and play. The seams are doubled and good quality. I did not find mid seam knots, broken threads, etc. Seams are likely very durable. The Goodthreads shirt is a little more expensive. It is a little thicker and softer. It is almost a flannel. However, the thickness and softness caused it to shrink more in the dryer. It loosened OK as I wore it, but I think after multiple washings and dryings, the Goodthreads may get a little tight. I have no concerns with the Essentials. Good shirt.
