GOODLAND [John] & Nicholas MOORE (Ed.). Seven. A complete run in 8 volumes. Taunton: John Goodland and Nicholas Moore, 1938-1940.

Crown 8vo., 8 volumes; stapled wrappers printed in a variety of colours with '7' design, ads to lower, many for 'Delta' magazine; printed throughout in black and white; a lovely complete set, the staples rusted, some light browning and spotting to the extremities, original subscribers form present in 3 of the 8 volumes, some splash marks to vol. III; light corner creasing present in some volumes; vol VI with some slightly more present spotting and ink marks to rear cover; the final volume the most spotted, with some soiling and creasing to covers, but a very good set nonetheless, and genuinely scarce complete.

First editions all, of this English magazine from the second wave of Ango-American modernism, founded in Cambridge by Moore and Goodland, fortified by its connection with the Villa Seurat group: Henry Millar, Lawrence Durrell and Anaïs Nin all feature consistently throughout the run, whilst the 5th issue (misnumbered 4, Summer 1939) includes a poem by Gerald Durrell, 'An African Dialogue', which is among his first appearances in print - he was at the time fourteen years of age.

Great Start
Format: Hardcover
My 9 year old doesn’t like reading. When it’s time for him to read to us, this is his go to book. Chapter books are a bit intimidating for him. He is eager to read about Max and is wanting to ready without us asking. We are looking forward to book 2.

Not so great unless you are willing to accept a certain amount on faith.
Format: Paperback
Similar criticism to my review of the Black Holes book: "Starts off ok, but quickly loses you. I have an extensive science education and quickly got lost. This topic cannot be easily explained in a brief book - the author is forced to jump over certain building blocks, and that just leaves the reader confused. I think this book series is good, but maybe not for abstract science topics."
