Primitive solar system material preserved in stone

This 16.91g slice captures the unequilibrated texture characteristic of Type 3 chondrites, where individual chondrules retain their distinct boundaries and compositions rather than blending into a homogeneous matrix. The polished surface reveals the internal architecture of this primitive material, showing spherical silicate structures suspended in fine-grained matrix. The low-iron composition distinguishes LL chondrites from their higher-metal counterparts, affecting both the visual appearance and the scientific significance of specimens like this one.

Northwest Africa yields numerous ordinary chondrite finds, but specimens classified as Type 3 represent a minority. The preservation state reflected in this classification makes NWA 12009 valuable for understanding conditions in the early solar nebula before thermal metamorphism altered the original chondritic structure. The slice format provides access to interior features while maintaining structural integrity across the cut surface.

Chondrule structure and matrix composition

Type 3 classification indicates minimal thermal processing after the initial formation of chondrules in the solar nebula. Individual chondrules show varying sizes and textures, reflecting different formation conditions for each spherical inclusion. The matrix surrounding these chondrules contains fine-grained silicate material that has not undergone the recrystallization seen in higher petrologic types. Boundaries between chondrules and matrix remain sharp rather than gradational.

The LL designation reflects iron content below 19% by total mass and very low metal abundance compared to other ordinary chondrite groups. This compositional difference affects the specimen's density, magnetic properties, and visual characteristics. Metal grains present in the matrix appear as small scattered inclusions rather than the more abundant distribution seen in H or L chondrites.

Scientific context

Ordinary chondrites represent the most abundant meteorite type in collections worldwide, yet Type 3 specimens constitute only a fraction of observed falls. The unequilibrated nature of LL3 chondrites preserves information about solar nebula processes that operated approximately 4.56 billion years ago. Chondrules formed through rapid melting and cooling of dust particles in the protoplanetary disk, creating the spherical structures now frozen in the meteorite matrix.

The LL parent body experienced less thermal alteration than the parent bodies of equilibrated ordinary chondrites. This lower degree of metamorphism allowed original textures and mineral compositions to persist rather than homogenizing under elevated temperatures. Scientists study Type 3 chondrites to understand the initial building blocks of planetesimals and the conditions present during the earliest stages of solar system formation. Learn About Meteorites to explore the broader context of chondritic materials and their role in planetary science research.

Frequently asked questions

Is this meteorite authenticated? NWA 12009 is officially classified in the Meteoritical Bulletin as an LL3 ordinary chondrite. The Meteoritical Bulletin entry: NWA 12009 documents the classification, find circumstances, and petrologic characteristics. Each specimen includes a certificate of authenticity verifying its classification and origin.

What does unequilibrated mean in meteorite classification? Type 3 chondrites are unequilibrated, meaning their mineral compositions vary from one chondrule to another rather than achieving chemical uniformity. This preservation of original heterogeneity indicates the parent body never heated sufficiently to allow minerals to equilibrate into consistent compositions throughout the rock. Higher petrologic types (4-6) show increasing degrees of thermal metamorphism and mineral equilibration.

What is included with this specimen? The listing includes the 16.91g polished slice and a certificate of authenticity documenting the classification and meteorite name. No display stand is included unless specifically noted in the product variant details.

How does the LL group differ from other ordinary chondrites? The LL group contains less than 19% total iron and very low metal content compared to L chondrites (20-25% iron) and H chondrites (25-31% iron). This compositional difference reflects distinct formation regions or conditions in the solar nebula. LL chondrites also show lower magnetic susceptibility due to reduced metal abundance.

Can I see chondrules on this polished slice? The polished surface reveals chondrule outlines and internal textures where the cutting plane intersects these spherical structures. Not all chondrules appear as perfect circles since the slice captures random cross-sections through the three-dimensional distribution of chondrules within the matrix. Viewing angle and lighting affect the visibility of individual features.

Building a chondrite collection

Type 3 ordinary chondrites occupy a specific niche in meteorite collections due to their primitive character and relatively limited availability compared to equilibrated types. The 16.91g mass provides sufficient surface area to examine chondrule textures while remaining accessible for collectors establishing reference collections of major meteorite groups. The slice format allows direct observation of internal structure without compromising the specimen through aggressive preparation.

LL chondrites represent one of the three major ordinary chondrite groups, making specimens like NWA 12009 useful for comparative study alongside H and L group examples. The polished finish enhances visibility of internal features while preserving the specimen for long-term display and examination. Collectors building comprehensive Chondrites collections value Type 3 specimens for their distinct petrologic properties and scientific significance.

Robot Vacuum With Decent Cleaning but Too Much Maintenance
Size: E28
This robot vacuum was fairly simple to set up, and the battery life is actually pretty good. When it comes to cleaning, it does a solid job picking up dirt and debris, and overall the suction works well for everyday vacuuming. However, the navigation and sensors really missed the mark for me. It struggled to recognize certain items around my house. For example, the mat under my cat’s food bowl kept getting caught because the vacuum didn’t detect it properly. It also had trouble recognizing furniture like my ottomans and would repeatedly run into them. Another issue was how it handled different floor types. It’s supposed to be able to recognize surfaces like carpet versus hard flooring, but that didn’t always work correctly. At one point it even tried cleaning my carpet when it shouldn’t have. It also struggled with room detection and didn’t consistently recognize different areas of my home, even when placed directly in them. I bought this hoping for more of a “set it and forget it” type of appliance since I work a lot and wanted something that would keep my floors clean without much attention. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my experience. I often had to redo the mapping or move the vacuum around so it could recognize spaces and objects properly. There were a few positives though. The app is very helpful and easy to use, and the vacuum communicates clearly through notifications. It lets you know when things like the water level or cleaning bin need attention, which I appreciated. Maintenance like emptying it isn’t required very often either. It’s also a little noisy. Not extremely loud, but it talks frequently and you definitely know when it’s running. Since I work third shift and sleep during the day, that was a bit frustrating. Another issue was that it struggled to cross small entry thresholds between rooms. Even a small lip between rooms would sometimes stop it from moving into another space. In the end, I decided to return it. While it does vacuum fairly well, the navigation issues and constant adjustments made it more of a hassle than a convenience. For the price, I expected something more hands-off, and unfortunately it required more attention than it was worth for me.

Great and Easy to Use!
Size: 11S
Background: I have a shedding dog, so I bought this in hopes that by running it every-day, it would pick up on some of the dog hair on the floor. What I like: -VERY easy to use. -easy to follow instructions -has a sticker on the bottom so if it ever stops and beeps, you can flip it over and it says exactly what the beeps mean (one beep means one thing, two beeps means another--which is SUPER helpful!). -color on top clearly shows what mode it is in (blue-ready to go, orange-needs to charge, red-problem to fix-such as emptying the tray). -very quiet. I can work on stuff with it in the room and it does not bother me at all (my dog also does not mind it). -works great on white carpet and easily transitions from my living room to dining room (which has a slight bump). -when its low on battery, it does not die where it is at, it just turns off the vacuum then finds the home doc and charges itself. -just works really well. I run it everyday and I am impressed by how much stuff it gets (especially when it goes under things such as the couch). -if it gets caught on a cord, it usually takes 5-10 seconds but then it stops the suctioning and moves away (releasing the cord or other item). However if you have a small cord you should put it up (and you should regardless, I just noticed it doing this a few times and thought it was neat, but I do try to pick up all cords). What could be improved: -nothing really in particular to this. -It does not work well on anything black, but this is true for all robot vacuums. It sometimes gets stuck when it goes on the black carpet we have with the black chairs (I suspect because it can not detect them), but this has not happened often. My dog has a black mat for her food and water and it always bumps into it and spills the water, but again, this would occur with any robot vacuum. -Also, make sure the doc is against a wall because otherwise it will move and never charge (self explanatory, but I did not do the first time and it kept trying to doc and was just pushing the doc around the floor). -Finally, you do have to dump out the vacuum particles almost every time you run it (if you do a full circle/battery cycle). It is really easy to dump and beeps when it needs to be emptied. Again, nothing really negative, just something to note. Overall, I really like this! It does a nice job cleaning up the dog hair and other things that get on my floor and saves me a lot of time not vacuuming daily. If you have a dog, I would watch them with this first before you use it. My dog was initially scared of it but sniffed it's "butt" and now they are cool and she does not mind it at all. Pleased with this product and would recommend! :) **UPDATE** On another note, Eufy has amazing customer service! I received an email from them addressing each of my "what could be improved" components with more information on the product. Very impressed.

ROB is amazing.
Size: E25 Black
I have to first explain that I have named my E25, his name is now ROB and will be referred to as ROB going forward. ROB has been an amazing addition to our family and yes I said Family. ROB was easy to set up, all instructions were clear and easy to follow. The first day, I followed ROB everywhere afraid he would get stuck on a rug, or would have difficulty making it over the transitions of our flooring. But ROB had no problems what so ever. And honestly, I found myself amazed at the quality and endurance of ROB. He was jumping over transitions, flipping from mop to vacuum at the proper times and would suck up a dog hair bunny from 3 feet away! As a home with 2 big dogs (over 100 pounds each) that looses enough fur to make a new sweater everyday, ROB has done an amazing job! It’s been a week with ROB and I have found that he takes no prisoners, there was an area that I didn’t want him going into because I had boxes laid out, I was lazy and just made a make shift barrier so he wouldn’t proceed through the area, but ROB was persistent and was able to move the barrier so he could do his job. So, if you want a robot that will jump a shoe wall, ROB is your man! ROB navigates around a dog toys, around dog bowls, and can even get rid of the doggy dribbles when they drink. I have ROB set up to vacuum during the day and at night, he vacuums and mops. My 2 dog sons and my family are all happy with ROB as he is quiet and doesn’t scare them. Most days they just watch ROB do his magic on our floors. ROB also cleans himself, he will run home to clean his butt after mopping and will empty his own debris from his vacuuming. I really don’t know how I survived without ROB this long!! I waited 6 months before I finally purchased ROB after seeing his brother BOB in action at my Cousins house. So don’t be like me and wait, just make the purchase. You won’t regret it.

Probably the best robot vacuum mop you can buy in this price range
Size: E25 Black
Its pretty solid device. Honestly its so smart that it vaccumed and mopped my bathroom and ofcourse the wet hair stuck on the wet floor wasnt vacuumed the first pass but it then waited for the second pass to pick it up when it was dry. Made my entire house look so clean its actually amazing. It actually mops and get all the corners with dust. One thing thouhh is the side brushes tend to get tangled with hair and thread but uts very snap on snap off brushes so removing the stuck hair is super easy and only sometimes happens. The suction is amazing too its very strong. It moos the floor with clean water with solution so its actually cleaning well. Overall 10/10

The best vacuum cleaner ever!!
Size: E25 Black, Size: E25 Black
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I honestly couldn’t be happier with the Eufy E25. I actually own two of them, and they’ve completely changed my daily routine. After spending a lot of money trying different brands, I finally found one that truly delivers everything I need in a vacuum. The suction power is impressive, it handles pet hair and debris effortlessly, and the mopping feature actually works (not just a light wipe like others I’ve tried). The self-emptying and self-cleaning system is a game changer—it saves so much time and maintenance. Navigation is smart and reliable, and it rarely gets stuck. It covers my floors efficiently and leaves everything noticeably cleaner. I also love how low-maintenance it is overall. If you’re tired of wasting money on vacuums that don’t live up to expectations, this is absolutely worth it. For me, it has truly been life-changing.
