Scarce first revised edition. This is the main work by the French Catholic missionary (1765-1848) who lived for some thirty years in India, attempting to convert people to Catholicism. He dressed and lived in the Hindu manners and wrote the best book on the subject for much of the 19th century. The East India company had bought the Abbé's manuscript in 1816, and published it. This edition however, is based on the author's later revisions and additions.
