Details

The set of six symphonies published in Paris by La Chevardière in 1763 as Opus 8 includes among its number a work by Stamitz's Mannheim colleague, Franz Xaver Richter. The remaining works appear to have been written over the period ca 1745-1751 and found their way into the set purely by chance. The haphazard nature of the opus is perhaps also evident in the choice of keys: three of the six works - and all of them by Stamitz - are in the same key, D major. While this lack of variety is not completely unknown in contemporary publications it does tend to support the view that La Chevardière was prepared to publish anything that came to hand. The title page of the publication reads: "SIX / SIMPHONIES / a quatre Parties obliges, / avec Haubois, et Cors de chasse / Composes par Mr / JEAN STAMITZ / Directeur de la Musique de S.A.S. / Mr l'Electeur Palatin à Mannheim. / OEUVRE VIII..." The present work, the third of the set, was probably composed during the period ca 1745 - 1749 and thus belongs both chronologically and stylistically to Stamitz's middle period. As is the case in many symphonies of the period, the oboe parts may be played by either oboes or flutes. This edition, which is based on La Chevardière's print, retains the oboe designation. In the absence of the autograph score or a set of authentic parts this edition presents as faithfully as possible the intentions of the composer as transmitted in La Chevardière's print. The notation of articulation and dynamic markings has been standardised throughout, and, where missing, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. These are indicated by the use of dotted slurs or brackets where appropriate. Like most eighteenth-century sources, the Chevardière print is inconsistent in its notation of appoggiature; these have also been standardised to minimise confusion. Obvious wrong notes have been silently corrected; otherwise, any editorial emendation with no authority from the source is placed within brackets. Allan Badley

Poor quality control - maybe outlet store leftovers
Size: 11.5, Color: Burgundy Polished Full Grain
The two shoes were not the same size. They were both labeled 11 1/2 but one shoe was larger than the other and the fit was poor. I returned the first pair and ordered a replacement. This time the shoes were close to the same size but too loose and the left one has sewing issues. I've bought Johnston & Murphy for years because of the quality. These were to replace an existing pair of burgundy penny loafers that have finally worn out (even after several heal/sole replacements). That is the expected quality. I suspect Nashville Shoe Warehouse may be handling shoes that didn't measure up for the quality; more like an outlet mall than getting the J&M quality I've come to expect. Update: went to Johnston & Murphy site to buy "direct" from the manufacturer. There were several recent reviews where the shoes were long and didn't fit properly. Genesco - please step up the manufacture / crafting of these classic shoes to the level of quality they used to have.

My husband enjoys wearing these shoes. Very classy looking. They fit well. They arrived quickly. He liked them so much he ordered another pair in a different color which have worked out just as well.

Way too narrow
Size: 9.5 Wide, Color: Burgundy Polished Full Grain
I ordered a wide in this shoe, but it was still way too narrow. I had to return them. Otherwise, it looked like a nice quality shoe.

I usually wear 11.5's, but I buy 1/2 size smaller to accommodate for stretch. Leather relaxes.

5 STARS: These shoes are awesome. I keep coming back for more. I have major foot problems, have tried all kinds of shoes, orthotics, and inserts... but believe it or not, these shoes work better than any of that stuff. I wear them daily. I buy lots of them, for home, for church, and I'm getting my first pair of J&M boots today, for winters in Indiana... Brrrr

Great price great shoe
Size: 12, Color: Burgundy Polished Full Grain
Excellent shoe. Tried the Sebago penny loafer and the sizing was ridiculous. These J and M are sized perfectly. I’ve had them before and they wear like iron. Very comfortable right out of the box.
