Pterodiscus makatiniensis is a rare succulent and has a swollen, woody caudex that serves as both a water reservoir and a striking visual feature. Growers often showcase them in shallow pots that display the caudex above the soil line, highlighting their unusual forms as part of succulent or bonsai-style collections.

Like many caudiciforms, its appeal lies not only in its flowers and foliage but also in the rugged beauty of its thickened base, which matures into a unique living sculpture.

Native to South Africa, it develops a compact, rounded caudex that may grow up to 11 inches tall and several inches in diameter, with annual growth of slender, herbaceous stems sprouting from the base during its active season.

The stems often carry lobed, green leaves that die back during winter dormancy, leaving the caudex as the main feature.

Over time, the plant becomes a striking specimen, blending the rugged, aged texture of its swollen base with the delicate seasonal foliage above.

Mature plants generally stay small, making them well-suited to container culture and ideal for collectors with limited space.

The trumpet-shaped flowers of Pterodiscus makatiniensis usually appear in shades of yellow to orange. These blooms emerge seasonally during the active growing period and contrast beautifully against the plant’s modest green foliage. Individual flowers are short-lived, opening for only a single day.

When it comes to care, plant in a very well-draining succulent, opens in a new tab soil mix. Use the soak and dry method; water deeply during the active growing season, then allow the soil to dry completely before watering again. During winter dormancy, reduce watering significantly, only giving a light drink once the caudex begins to wrinkle.

When growing indoors, provide bright, indirect light or direct morning sun. Maintain temperatures between 65–85°F, and avoid placing near cold drafts.

Outdoors, it thrives in full sun to partial shade in USDA Zones 10–11.

In cooler climates, it must be grown in containers and overwintered indoors.

Apply a diluted succulent fertilizer once a year in the spring to encourage healthy growth and blooming. Avoid fertilizing during dormancy.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Pterodiscus makatiniensis is a truly distinctive caudiciform succulent, combining rugged survival traits with ornamental appeal. Its compact size, swollen caudex, and seasonal flowers make it a collector’s treasure, particularly for those who enjoy unusual and sculptural plants. With proper care—bright light, well-drained soil, and careful watering- it will thrive for years, slowly maturing into a living work of art. Whether grown indoors as a conversation piece or outdoors in frost-free climates, it brings an exotic touch to any plant collection.

Wears out more quickly than standard versions
Color: bone, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1), Color: bone, Size: 1 Count (Pack of 1)
While my puppy loved this bone and it was a good starter toy, it didn't last long. Our lab puppy loves to chew - especially when we stuffed the ends on this bone. After about 1.5 months of moderate use, she ended up chewing off and swallowing a small chunk of this bone, which she thankfully passed without issue. The material of this bone is intentionally softer than other kong toys, so it breaks down easier, and you will need to inspect it for wear more frequently. We have since upgraded to the large super chewer version for her, and she still loves it.
