Il rubino è la più nobile varietà monocristallina dell’ossido di alluminio (Al2O3), un minerale noto come corindone, fortemente allocromatico. Presenta durezza 9 nella Scala di Mohs.

La scala di Mohs è un criterio empirico per la valutazione della durezza dei materiali. Prende il nome dal mineralogista tedesco Friedrich Mohs, che la ideò nel 1812. Essa assume come riferimento la durezza di dieci minerali numerati progressivamente da 1 a 10, tali che ciascuno è in grado di scalfire quello che lo precede ed è scalfito da quello che lo segue.

Il Rubino si presenta di colore rosso vivace, dovuto a inclusioni di cromo, ma può assumere varie tonalità di questo colore, che vanno dal rosso più vivo, anche detto "sangue di piccione", al rosato.

Gli antichi indiani chiamavano il rubino ratnaraj, cioè "il re delle pietre preziose".
