Because it is tied to the plant, there is minimal chance of the label being lost over time. Untied, they can be partially inserted into the soil of any container holding a plant, to perform the same information-giving function. The range of colours allows for the rapid and easy identification of different batches of similar plants, or to indicate any distinction between plants, or any other items, that are similar in appearance.
