45.71g slice preserves impact crater field history

This 45.71g Kaalijärv slice comes from one of the few meteorites directly linked to a preserved crater field. The Kaali impact structure on Saaremaa Island, Estonia, formed approximately 3,500 years ago during the Bronze Age, creating nine craters when a single iron body fragmented during atmospheric entry. The main crater measures 110 meters in diameter and remains visible today, making this meteorite one of the youngest impact events with both material and terrestrial evidence available to collectors.

The specimen has been etched to reveal internal structure. Neumann bands cross the kamacite lamellae as fine parallel lines, recording shock pressures experienced during either the parent body disruption event or the terminal impact on Earth. These deformation features provide a readable record of the forces that shaped this iron's history from asteroid core to terrestrial crater field.

Widmanstätten pattern with shock deformation

As an IAB-MG (medium-grained) octahedrite, this specimen displays the classic Widmanstätten pattern formed through extremely slow cooling within a differentiated asteroid core. Kamacite bands measuring several millimeters in width intersect at characteristic octahedral angles, bounded by thinner taenite ribbons. The crystalline structure reflects cooling rates of approximately 1-10 degrees Celsius per million years.

Neumann bands appear as sets of parallel lines within individual kamacite crystals. These shock-induced twin lamellae form when iron crystals deform plastically under pressures exceeding 130 kilobars. Multiple band orientations visible in this slice indicate the material experienced complex shock loading, consistent with either a catastrophic parent body collision or the hypervelocity impact that formed the Estonian crater field. The bands contrast visibly against the etched kamacite surface.

IAB complex formation and parent body origin

The IAB complex represents a diverse group of iron meteorites that cooled at varying rates within a disrupted and reassembled parent body. Unlike magmatic irons that crystallized from a homogeneous molten core, IAB irons contain silicate inclusions and show chemical variations suggesting formation through impact-generated melting rather than standard planetary differentiation. The MG structural classification indicates medium kamacite bandwidth resulting from intermediate cooling rates.

Current models suggest the IAB parent body experienced a major collision early in solar system history, creating a mixed assemblage of metal and silicate that partially melted and subsequently cooled at different rates depending on fragment size and burial depth. This complex history distinguishes IAB meteorites from simpler magmatic iron groups. For more on iron meteorite classification and structure, see Learn About Meteorites.

Frequently asked questions

Is this meteorite authenticated? Yes. Kaalijärv is classified as Iron IAB-MG in the Meteoritical Bulletin. You can verify the classification at MetBull search: Kaalijarv. This specimen includes a certificate of authenticity with purchase.

What are Neumann bands? Neumann bands are parallel shock-induced deformation features that form within iron meteorite crystals when subjected to extreme pressure, typically above 130 kilobars. They appear as fine parallel lines crossing the kamacite structure and serve as a permanent record of impact events experienced by the meteorite.

What is included with this specimen? You receive the 45.71g etched slice and a certificate of authenticity. No display stand is included.

Why is the Kaalijärv fall significant? Kaalijärv is one of few meteorites with a preserved, dateable crater field. The Bronze Age impact on Saaremaa Island created visible craters still accessible today, making this material historically and geologically significant beyond its crystalline structure.

Can I see the Widmanstätten pattern without magnification? Yes. The medium-grained structure of this IAB-MG octahedrite produces kamacite bands several millimeters wide, clearly visible to the naked eye on the etched surface. The Neumann bands require closer inspection but are visible without magnification under proper lighting.

Structural clarity and terrestrial impact context

Iron meteorite collectors value Kaalijärv for its dual appeal: well-developed octahedral structure with visible shock features, combined with documented connection to a terrestrial impact site. The presence of Neumann bands in this slice adds scientific value, as these features provide direct evidence of the extreme forces iron meteorites experience during their violent histories. The medium grain size offers optimal visual clarity of both the Widmanstätten pattern and the superimposed deformation bands.

At 45.71g, this slice provides substantial display presence while remaining accessible for collectors building comprehensive iron meteorite representations. The etched surface reveals structural detail across the entire face, with multiple Neumann band orientations readable under examination. Material from this Estonian crater field appears less frequently in the market compared to larger iron falls, adding collecting interest to specimens with clear structural features. Great many outlets but insufficient usb power for most needs
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong, Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
I absolutely LOVE how many ports/outlets this extension unit has. It has usb-As, usb-Cs, AC outlets, on/off switch... In that regard, it's perfect. But. If you're looking to charge your phone or laptop, for example, by plugging your charging cord without an adapter, directly into a usb-c or usb-a port, you'll be completely out of luck. When I first got this I plugged in my laptop cord directly into one the usb-c ports while using it. I eventually, fairly quickly I must say, realized that it was as though the laptop wasn't plugged in at all. It even seemed to lose power faster than if it weren't plugged in! And, it was the only thing plugged in at the time. So it might just be me expecting a charge instead of the opposite, but the issue stands. I had to go and find my A/C adapter and charge my laptop the same way I would without this unit, as if I was plugged into the wall. Now I'm sure there are people out here surprised that anyone would be confused by having to use an adapter to charge a phone or laptop while using this unit. My confusion comes from the unit having as many usb-c and usb-a ports as it does. I don't think it's a stretch to assume, as I did, that the point of having so many ports is to actually use them. One reason I haven't rated this lower is that I knew of the ports low voltage and wattage, so I wasn't completely surprised by having to use an adapter, though I WAS surprised by how completely useless the usb ports seem to be. Also, one description picture shows a phone being charged WITHOUT an adapter. And this does charge my phone but only if I'm not using it. It stays at pretty much the same battery level if I'm using it while charging it. So I don't think I'm 100% at fault for being surprised If you will be using the usb ports to charge a small appliance, a groomer, a shaver, a toothbrush? I'm sure this will do well. I don't have any of those so I guess I won't be using the usb ports at all or will use them only if I'm not in a rush to get a fast charge. Once the initial surprise subsided, I'm still glad I got this. It has ELEVEN A/C outlets, a flat plug that can fit just about anywhere and behind any piece of furniture, and I could still charge my phone (thought not my laptop) in a pinch. I think the price at the time of this review is fine for those features. 3.5 stars.

Many Outlets in One Compact Device!
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
The number of outlets is impressive for its size, and the USB ports are super convenient for phones, tablets, and other small devices. Everything charges steadily without overheating, and the 5 ft cord gives enough flexibility to place it where I need it. I also really appreciate the compact design. Even with so many plugs available, it doesn’t feel bulky or cluttered. It fits nicely behind furniture and keeps everything organized instead of having a mess of adapters everywhere. It’s especially perfect for older homes or apartments with only a couple of outlets per room. While it’s not a substitute for true grounded outlets for heavy appliances, it works perfectly for everyday electronics. These items are typically fine: Phone chargers Laptops LED lamps Routers / modems TVs (modern, low draw) These devices are double-insulated or low risk, so they don’t rely heavily on grounding. Avoid using this for: Space heaters Air conditioners Microwaves Refrigerators Power tools Anything metal-bodied or high-power Without a real ground, a fault could energize the casing and increase shock risk. Overall, this is a solid, reliable, and incredibly convenient power strip. I’d definitely recommend it to anyone needing more outlets and USB charging in one simple solution for appliances motioned above that are safer to use with relatively better price.

Perfect Sofa-Side Charging Hub
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong, Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
I picked this power strip mainly to use next to my sofa, where I usually charge my tablet, phone, and laptop while relaxing in the evening. Having 11 AC outlets and multiple USB ports in one place has made that corner much more organized, and I no longer have chargers scattered everywhere. The layout is well thought out. Larger plugs don't block neighboring outlets, and the flat angled plug fits nicely behind furniture. The 5-foot cord gives enough flexibility to position the strip where it's most convenient. I also like having both USB-A and USB-C ports available for smaller devices. For phones, tablets, earbuds, and similar electronics, the built-in USB ports have been very useful. For my everyday use, charging personal devices and powering small electronics, the unit has performed as expected. The overload protection switch and built-in safety features provide additional peace of mind. Overall, this has been a practical solution for adding more outlets to an older two-prong receptacle while keeping my charging area tidy and easy to access.

Major Safety Red Flag! 3 Prong Outlets, 2 Prong Plug, This Does Not Provide A Grounded Connection!
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong, Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
This power strip has a compact design, a convenient outlet layout, and USB ports, so on the surface it looks useful. The patented three-row layout is clever for spacing the outlets, but that only applies to how the outlets are positioned. It does not change how the strip is actually powered or protected. The problem is the safety design. It has 11 three-prong outlets, but the wall plug itself is only two-prong. Without a ground prong, it is not grounded. The two flat prongs are hot and neutral only, so this does not provide the grounded protection that the three-prong outlets appear to suggest. That also makes the surge protection claims highly questionable to me. A real grounded surge protector should have a grounding path for excess surge energy. With only a two-prong plug, I would not trust this to provide the kind of surge protection people generally expect when plugging in electronics or grounded devices. The manual mentions surge protection, ground protection, short-circuit protection, over-current protection, over-voltage protection, over-heat protection, and UL 1363 safety standards, but I could not find any visible UL, ETL, or similar safety certification mark on the unit or paperwork. The only marking I saw was FCC, which is not the same thing as electrical safety certification. Given the two-prong plug and three-prong outlets, those protection claims feel dubious at best and misleading at worst. The USB charging is also underwhelming. The total USB output is listed as 24W, which is not much for today’s devices, especially when that power is shared across multiple ports. We frequently use 35W or higher from a single USB charger, so I would not buy this for fast or modern device charging either. Because of the two-prong plug paired with three-prong outlets, I will absolutely not use this. I do not want a power strip that makes devices appear protected or grounded when they are not. For me, this is not a small design issue. It is a serious safety concern.

Convenient Design but Raises Some Safety Concerns
Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong, Size: 5FT, Color: White 2prong
As other reviews have mentioned, this power strip does not provide true grounding protection. It allows devices with three-prong plugs to connect through a two-prong wall outlet, but the strip itself still relies on a two-prong connection. Because of that, I think it’s important to understand the potential safety limitations before using it, especially with higher-powered electronics. It does offer a large number of outlets and USB ports, which is convenient for older homes with limited access to modern plugs. However, considering the price, there are safer and more reliable alternatives available that may be a better long-term choice.
