What is an ionic toothbrush?

The Ionic Toothbrush helps remove plaque and bacteria from otherwise difficult places to reach, by breaking the electrostatic bond of the surface of a tooth.  As a result, this reverses the polarity of the tooth and creates a negatively charged circuit to collect bacteria and plaque.

How does an ionic toothbrush work?

How it works
  • The ionic action is brought about through a light-activated titanium rod (semiconductor) inside the handle and a solar panel at the end of the handle. When exposed to any light source (a fluorescent bathroom light, a plain light bulb, or sunlight), the photo-sensitive titanium rod inside the Soladey toothbrush converts light into negatively-charged ions (electrons). The stream of electrons is enhanced by the solar panel. The rod releases these ions, which travel out through the bristles of the brush head. The electrons blend with saliva to attract positive (hydrogen) ions from the acid in the dental plaque on your teeth resulting in the disintegration and destruction of the plaque.
  • As a result of the semiconductor rod, super oxide ions are formed which form a layer over the teeth. This makes it more difficult for the plaque  to adhere to the teeth, allowing the teeth to stay cleaner in between brushing.
  • With the ionic action, acids in the mouth are neutralized reducing dental erosion and freshening the breath.
  • One of the main causes of tooth decay is the presence of dangerous bacteria in the mouth made up of over 500 species. The Soladey toothbrush has been proven to be effective against S. mutans, Escherichia coli and ginivalis bacteria, the main contributors to dental caries and gum disease.
  • Toothpaste is not required as water (saliva) is the acting ingredient - oral hygiene now becomes not only natural, but also economical! For those who find it hard to give up toothpaste, use only very small amount! These toothbrushes can be used with small amounts of our green clay toothpowder, our activated charcoal or our walnut bark powder. These toothbrushes can also be used with a mouthwash solution made from our organic miswak sticks and this can be very beneficial to strengthen the enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity. All of these natural dental products are available in our online dental department.
  • Children often swallow a small portion of toothpaste, which may have a negative impact on health from over the long-term. Therefore children should use only the tiniest amounts or toothpaste; this is another reason the Soladey toothbrush is the best choice.

With regular use, ionic toothbrushes can result in cleaner, healthier and whiter teeth.

How to use the Soladey ionic toothbrush

Brush the tongue

After wetting the bristles and semiconductor with water (saliva is sufficient outdoors) brush all surfaces of your tongue without using toothpaste, and especially first thing in the morning after stomach acids have accumulated from sleeping. Brush from the back of tongue (not in the throat!) to the tip of the tongue. You may see discolouration on the bristles (concentrated bacteria and accumulation of acids), and so make sure you rinse bristles with water repeatedly to remove this film. Once you feel the bristles and tongue are adequately clean then you can work on the tooth surfaces as now there will be less concentration of bacteria in your mouth. Bear in mind that the tongue generally carries most of the mouth's bacteria! Saliva is sufficient for brushing teeth outdoors, but in this case we do not recommend you brush your tongue outdoors without a source of running water available to clean the bristles.

Brush the surfaces of the teeth

Continue to brush your teeth lightly and thoroughly in the same way as with an ordinary toothbrush. Concentrate on contacting the teeth rather than applying force.  Unlike a conventional toothbrush, you do not need to brush with force, and so a medium head will penetrate the spaces in between your teeth more efficiently than a soft head and without splaying. Brushing lightly will also be easier on your gums and help fight gingivitis (gum disease/ receding gums).

Make certain there is an adequate light source (natural or artificial) necessary to activate the semiconductor. If you are brushing the back teeth open your mouth as wide enough so that the available light may reach your back teeth. The best option is to move close to a direct light source which will illuminate the inside of your mouth! The brighter the source the better the result.  You will notice that your saliva will foam slightly when the toothbrush is working effectively.  If you are using toothpaste use very little as this can foam over the rod and block the light.

Brush the gum line

Hold the brush at 45 degrees to the gum line, push the edges of the bristles up against the gums and gently rock the brush against the gum margin, going over each tooth - on the cheek side (buccal) and on the inside surfaces (lingual). Don't forget to reach behind the back molars.

How to replace the brush heads

To keep the toothbrush operating at maximum efficiency, replace the heads regularly.  Recommended replacement every 2 -3 months or when bristles start to curve outwards.

Pull the head and handle apart along the axis

Insert the head into the handle firmly

Do NOT twist or bend the head and handle during detachment and insertions.

How to clean the Soladey toothbrush

Rinse the brush head and the entirety of the brush after use to remove saliva, bacteria and remains of toothpaste. Periodically (about once a week) pull the toothbrush head off the brush and rinse the titanium rod. Always replace the toothbrush head straight after cleaning to avoid damage to the rod. If toothpaste adheres to the base of the replacement head during use, it can set hard and make head removal difficult, so removed the head and clean the rod to prevent this from happening straight after use.

Soladey 3 Toothbrushes in four colours.

Packets of genuine replacement heads (4 in each pack):

  • Soft bristles: best for sensitive teeth, teeth with thin enamel, for troublesome teeth and gums. These are the compact heads with 3 rows of bristles across.
  • Medium bristles: very good for cleaning the gum line and brushing teeth prone to staining. Our current stock is 4 row.
  • Tapered heads: better for access for crowded and overlapping teeth, for access to rear molars. 3 row.
  • Child heads: as above, also better for children with small mouths and for pet care such as dogs and even cats.
  • Honeycomb heads: medium texture, containing charcoal and silver. Each bristle has a hexagon profile, giving extra cleaning power. The rows of bristles have a raised notch of bristles part way along the brush head which are great for cleaning along the indentations of the molars. The charcoal and silver ions help the brush heads to stay more hygienic between use. 3 row.

Frequently asked questions

What is the life of the Soladey toothbrush? With proper use, almost indefinitely.

Is the semiconductor safe? Titanium dioxide, the metal from which the rod is made, does not dissolve or corrode.

Will teeth become yellow if not using toothpaste? Reflecting the dentin colour, healthy teeth are naturally off white in colour.  Brushing only with water restores the original colour.  If you must use tooth, only a tiny amount is recommended.

Is there any proof of the effectiveness of the Soladey? Clinical literature is available from dental colleges.  According to studies, toothbrushes with semiconductors  have proven to be as effective as plaque removing tools. We have included some research paper below.

Can Soladey be used to clean fillings, crowns or other dental work? Yes, Soladey will be effect as reducing plaque and provide an anti-bacterial effect even on modified teeth.

Can Soladey be used with braces/retainers? The Soladey with help neutralise bacteria for those wearing braces. Brush carefully to avoid damaging the materials of the braces.  Remove retainers prior to brushing and make sure the retainers have been cleaned before replacing.

Do you also have the Soladey Sonic Ionic toothbrush? Yes, it has its own product page. Soladey Sonic Ionic Rhythm 2 Toothbrush

What are the main differences between the Ionic toothbrush on this page and the Sonic Ionic toothbrush?
The sonic ionic toothbrush has all of the benefits of the Soladey 3 Ionic toothbrush, but it takes a AAA rechargeable battery which powers the brush head to oscillate at up to 22,ooo revolutions per minute. So the Rhythm 2 has even more cleaning power.

Where are these brushes made?
All of the replacement heads are made in Japan. The Soladey-3 handle unit is made in China, because they are the main producers of solar panels.

A very frustrating experience
Format: Paperback
I very rarely write reviews for things, but I felt compelled to do so for this book based on my experience. I had an amazing experience with this book for the first 3 chapters. There were some errors and things just plain missing in those chapters, but I was able to debug and provide solutions for those things. For example, some lines of code were omitted and score keeping was completely left out from Chapter 3. I have since found that errata is helpfully published on the GitHub repository. Overall I had a lot of fun working through the first 3 chapters. Chapter 4 is where I decided to give up and move on to other resources. I found the lack of guidance on level design and truly understanding and using tile maps and tile sets downright frustrating. Perhaps this chapter would be more approachable if I had prior game development experience. The author very much glosses over level design and it went from a poor explanation of the concept to just "now design your level". Referencing the finished project from the GitHub repository did not provide much assistance either. If you are new to game development, I think the first 3 chapters are a helpful introduction and they have definitely furthered my interest in both Godot and game development. However, I had to bail after Chapter 4 in search of better material. Perhaps I will return to the book after learning more from other resources.

Great introduction to Godot 4.0 & a way to clean up messy fundamentals
Format: Paperback
As a hobbyist Godot game dev, I was worried the early chapters of this book would be boring for me because of the beginner-friendly nature of the book. What I instead found while reading through the first few chapters was that a lot of the online Godot tutorials out there are great for code, but not as much for planning - this book has helped me to really think through what nodes I use. I've also learned about incredibly useful things I had no idea existed, even as early as the first project, such as MarginContainer nodes. There are the occasional errors in the chapters I've read such as typos in function names or missing images, but the book itself does link to where such errors can be reported and I'll certainly be doing my part to report those errors when I have the time to finish working through the book's projects. All in all, while I haven't gotten very far into the book yet, I'm already pleased with what I've seen & even more excited about the upcoming chapters based on the promised topics - in particular, I'm super excited to get to the chapter with procedural generation!

From the creator of the Godot Recipes site!
Format: Paperback
Absolutely loved this, takes you through building 5 different games from start to finish, and explains not only how to do things, but it also explains the why! Throughout the course of making these 5 games, you also get introduced to many of the Nodes within Godot, explanations on how they are used, and gives you some experience using them! Feels good to add more tools into your toolkit as you become more familiar and comfortable using more Nodes. Even though this book is not intended for beginners, I would still recommend this book. It comes with a link where you can download example files and get going with minimal effort, however to get the most out of the book I would try to recreate stuff yourself. I found it very useful for easing myself into trying out 3D development. I've been doing 2D for years, and am currently developing a 2D game in Godot, once I complete that I'll be diving headfirst into 3D and this book gave me a lot of insight, and I feel much better about the whole process.
