BYRD, Richard Evelyn. Discovery. The Story of the Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition. Introduction by Claude A. Swanson. New York, G.P. Putnam's Sons, 1935.

8vo. Original cloth, gilt, map endpapers; pp. xxiii, 405; highly illustrated on plates and frontispiece, one map; spine sunned, covers a little marked, internally good.

First edition, a good copy. - Spence 229.

[Together with]: 31 crew photos (c. 68-70 x 90-94 mm); one photo with horizontal fold, light sepia toning; one stamped on verso Byrd Antarctic Expedition. [Canal Zone and Dunedin, c. 1929/30].

These photos, taken by and privately printed for crew members during short trips to the North to re-stock supplies and on the way back to the US show the City of New York at the edge of the ice, men sawing ice and carrying ice blocks, dogs at rest and work, an atmospheric image of a camp with tents, men and dogs, a group of three men, one most likely Byrd, and one or two more portraits of the leader of the expedition, penguins and marine wildlife, Little America with its radio transmission masts, and the Ford trimotor aircraft. - A charming collection of private and not press photos, snapshots taken by members of Byrd's first Antarctic expedition.

Best series on the market
Format: Paperback
Every book in these series (Who Was, What Was, Where Is) is worth adding to your library. In my classroom they are the ones that have been read over and over. Students sign up to check out the newest releases even before they have arrived. I am collecting them all and have over 125 to date. So interesting, I read them as soon as they arrive.

Format: Paperback
Very good. Also includes some information on other aspects of Roman life besides just the uses of the Colosseum. Wish the author had given more details about the Colosseum itself - especially the system of pulleys and underground chambers.
