幼少期から柔道を始める。投げを重視する柔道において極めにこだわったスタイルで頭角をあらわし、全日本ジュニア強化選手に選出。早稲田大学進学後に柔術を始め（中井祐樹氏より黒帯を授与）、在学中に総合格闘技家としてプロデビュー。
2000年代はDEEP、修斗、PRIDE、DREAMで国内トップ選手となり、2010年以降は海外に活躍の場を広げ、現在はONE Championshipを主戦場とする。
