FAQ IGCSE Computer Science:
What additional equipment do I need to bring to the exams?
For IGCSE Computer Science you may use a HB pencil for graphs and diagrams. Calculators are not allowed for Paper 1 and are unlikely to be needed for Paper 2 although there is no instruction that one cannot be used.
Do I need to learn more than one programming language?
No, you should choose one of the programming languages specified in the exam board’s specifications (Python, C# or Java) and focus on this. When booking your exam please ensure that you select the language that you have chosen to study. Failure to select the correct option will result in you getting the wrong source code for Paper 2.
Do I need experience of writing programmes?
Unlike GCSE Computer Science we do not need to provide the exam board with any evidence of your programming experience as this is assessed in Paper 2. It is recommended that you gain practical programming experience to ensure that you are prepared for this paper.
What are the arrangements for Paper 2?
Paper 2 does not have a timetabled date as it can be sat on any day within a window at the beginning of the first week of June. You will be informed by email of the exact timings for the exam. In the exam you will be provided with a laptop which will have the appropriate source code provided by Pearson downloaded along with any software required for your chosen programming language. You will need to save your work to the laptop as directed on the exam paper and after the exam we will upload your work to the Pearson secure website for assessment.
Am I allowed a calculator for the exams?
Calculators are not permitted for Paper 1 of IGCSE Computer Science exams. There are no specific instructions preventing the use of a calculator in Paper 2, however it is unlikely that a calculator will be needed as this paper focuses on programming skills
