Discover the profound insights of the Democratic Republic of Congo with Tom Turner's critically acclaimed book, published by John Wiley & Sons in 2013. This brand new edition (ISBN: 9780745648446) delves into the complex history and ongoing struggles within one of the world's most tumultuous regions. As one of the deadliest conflicts since World War II, the DRC's turmoil is marked by the aftermath of a devastating five-year war that has claimed millions of lives.

Turner’s work expertly navigates the intricate narratives surrounding the Congo, addressing how the deep-rooted causes of violence continue to haunt the nation despite recent peace agreements and democratic elections. The author explores varying perspectives on the conflict, from civil war and foreign aggression to the lingering impacts of Rwanda's Hutu-Tutsi tensions. With a deep focus on the prevalence of sexual violence and its classification as a 'hidden war against women,' this book provides a thorough analysis of the ongoing crisis.

This 240-page exploration not only highlights the multiple dimensions of the Congo crisis but also argues that without a comprehensive understanding and consensus on these issues, efforts to rebuild the DRC will remain ineffective. Perfect for readers seeking to comprehend the complexities of the DRC and its future, this book is an essential addition to your collection.

Description:
The Democratic Republic of Congo has become one of the world's
bloodiest hot spots. 2003 saw the end of a five-year war in which
millions lost their lives - one of the deadliest conflicts since
World War II. Despite recent peace agreements and democratic
elections, the country is still plagued by army and militia
violence. Congo remains deeply troubled, since the deep-rooted
causes of conflict have not been adequately addressed.

The conflict in the DRC has divided opinion; some call it a
civil war, or a war of aggression by the country's neighbours;
others a continuation of Rwanda's Hutu-Tutsi conflict on Congolose
soil, and a war of partition and pillage. The prevalence of rape
and sexual violence has led some analysts to mark it out as a
hidden ?war against women'. Tom Turner's insightful book
reveals how each of these descriptions accurately captures the
separate elements of this complex and multidimensional political
conflict. In exploring each of these contributory factors, he shows
how current attempts to rebuild the shattered state and society of
DRC are doomed to fail. So long as the full complexity of the Congo
crisis is not taken into account and a clear consensus as to its
precise dimensions reached, the future looks bleak. The DRC, he
argues, will likely remain a global hot spot for some time to
come.

Cushiony and lightweight sneakers!
Size: 5.5 Toddler, Color: Gold/Rainbow, Size: 5.5 Toddler, Color: Gold/Rainbow
The shoes are excellent quality! I was worried that the soles would be heavy since they are a little thicker than other toddler shoes, but this is not the case. The shoes are lightweight and run true to size. They were a little hard to put on the first two times and I thought, "Oh no, they must be too narrow." However, after my toddler wore these for a few hours each time, they stretched out and I checked her feet and did not notice any signs of discomfort, such as impressions on her feet from the shoes and/or redness. Toddler walked "normal" and even ran in these. The style is supercute (gotta love the subtle sparkles) and athletic and they appear to give her a lot of support. I can't speak to durability as she has only worn them for a few weeks but so far, they held up well and I have no issues with the velcro. I am glad they softened and stretched out after a short time of wear and they have plenty of cushion! Overall, these are great and no complaints here. I highly recommend!
