AESOP; Sir Roger L’ESTRANGE (translator). The Fables of Aesop. Waltham Saint Lawrence, Berkshire: The Golden Cockerel Press. 1926.

Large 8vo. Cream-backed brown publisher’s boards lettered in gilt to spine, in typographic dust-jacket; with 11 wood engravings by Celia M. Fiennes; pp. [8], iii-v, [1], 94, [6]; almost entirely uncut, spine tips lightly bumped, previous bookseller sticker “Paul Elder & Co, San Francisco” to rear paste-down, bookplate of Alma Ruth Lavenson to the front paste-down (see below); a near-fine copy; the jacket is lightly spotted, browned along spine and to folds, chipped to extremities with some closed tears along spine; good but seldom found.

Limited edition, number 268 of 350 copies, of L’Estrange’s translation of the Fables, rare in dust-jacket.

L’Estrange first published his version of the fables in 1692, and it is now regarded as one of the most popular English translations. Commissioned by a group of booksellers, his edition appeared two years after Locke had recommended Aesop as an ideal first reading book for children. As Muir notes, it was “the best and largest collection of fables in English, and he had children especially in mind when making his compilation”. L’Estrange’s Aesop is, in fact, “an assemblage of fables and facetiae from a variety of sources, ancient and modern, the second volume being wholly un-Aesopian. The trenchant reflections added to the individual fables possess a strong political animus and were to draw severe criticism from the later Whig fabulist Samuel Croxall; but all L’Estrange’s translations have some degree of political colouring” (DNB).

The simplistic yet highly effective wood engravings are by Celia M. Fiennes, a direct descendant of the seventeenth-century travel writer Celia Fiennes. She was an accomplished printmaker and illustrator – in the same year as this publication, she produced twelve wood engravings for the Cresset Press edition of Matthew Stevenson’s 1661 work The Twelve Moneths.

Provenance: From the library of the American photographer Alma Ruth Lavenson (1897-1989). Lavenson was particularly prolific in the 1920s and 30s and was influenced by Pictorialism; she worked alongside photographers such as Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and Edward Weston, and developed friendships with these artists.

LOVE this tough toy! My teething puppy is still enjoying it!
Color: Hedgehog
LOVE the hedgehog! Very tough! My dachshund has not been able to chew off any of the 'nubs', and does she try! lol The only thing is, the first thing she did was chew off the nose, but I discarded it and watched her closely to make sure she didn't chew off any more, and no, its still being chewed on. Wish I could find more toys like this one!!

Perfect First Toy for Tiny Puppies – Lightweight, Engaging, and a Great Value
Color: Teething Stick, Color: Teething Stick
This Cool Teething Stick has been the absolute best first toy for our 1.5 pound puppy! It’s incredibly lightweight, making it easy for even the tiniest pups to pick up, carry, and play with independently. The soft crinkle sound keeps him entertained without being overwhelming, and the little ribbon ends plus the triangular shapes add just the right amount of texture and interest. For the quality, design, and how much joy it brings, the price is unbeatable. At $4.99, this is an easy must-buy for anyone with a young or very small puppy. Highly recommend for a tiny puppy. I do think the durability could be an issue for a large puppy. Keep in mind this puppy is under 2 pounds.

My puppy loves it
Color: Teething Stick
It's cute and a good size for my chihuahua puppy. It seems to be slightly tearing at the seam in the middle, but hopefully it will hold up.

Good size for my pug!
Color: Dentachew 3 Pk
I love how it’s a good size for my pug it is easy for her to play around with. I had stuffed animals for her to play around with but it looked so silly to watch her play with something that is 10 times as big as her 😂. I had to buy her these toys and she seemed so happy when she first got them. It was so funny and interesting that she had to chew all three toys and decide which one she liked. At first she decided to play with the rope toy and she liked the rope toy, then she got curious with the rubber toys. She has decided that the rubber toys are her favorite and I’ve tried to engage with playing with her with the rope toy. She gets more interactive with the rubber toys! She also looked so relieved while chewing them so that’s a plus!

Dog loved, started to break down after 10 minutes.
Color: Hedgehog, Color: Hedgehog
I don’t know why it’s so difficult to find a quality teething toy that won’t begin to break down within (in this case) the first 10 minutes. I have a 17lb, 5 mos old Bernedoodle and she’d broken two pieces off the snout in 10 minutes and tried eating them. Yeah, yeah, they’d most likely pass - but this shouldn’t happen with a product specifically sold as a dog chew toy and listed for teething. On the plus side, she loves it - but I can’t obsessively monitor her every second of her teething either. Hit with the dog, frustrating for the ‘parent’.
