This Skeleton Feejee Mermaid died a gruesome death. Entangled in fishing nets, she truly did go to sleep with the fishes.  She is wrapped and encircled with chains, Czech glass water droplets, and a verdigris seahorse.

So exquisite are their visage and sometimes also their song, that mermaids could inspire sailors into such yearning distraction that their ships could often be caused to disastrously run aground on rocks; indeed, some seafarers considered that the merest sighting of a mermaid was a grim portent of doom.
