Two volumes, 8vo. Contemporary pebble-grained cloth with red morocco lettering-pieces to spines; pp. [4], xi, 439; [iv], 503; light marking and wear to bindings, only a little spotted internally; from Holland House Library (book plates), which was bomb-damaged in 1940.

First edition. 'It is strange that this book had never been translated into English, for it is the single work wich offers the most complete picture of American life written by any French traveller during the period of the Civil War. The author was endowed with a penetrating observation and a felicitous style. He arrived in the United States in June, 1864, during a critical period of the war, and remained until February, 1865, when the victory of the North was certain. During that time he travelled extensively: from Quebec to Georgia and from Boston to Missouri. Among his many interesting pages will be found valuable materials on Boston, Philadelphia, New York, Washington, Chicago, Missouri, and Kentucky' (Monaghan 623). Duvergier de Hauranne was a travel writer, journalist and moved in circles that supported the House of Orléans.

I ordered these by mistake once when trying to order more of the normal sized and mini ones from this brand. I love their other patches and thought these would be great to have on hand too. Sometimes I feel like these don’t seem as effective as the typical 12mm patches from most brands regardless of the type of blemish I put it on. But I think they get the job done. They definitely stay on, but I prefer patches with the visible circle in the middle and transparent edges. These are nearly invisible and smooth though so easy to cover with makeup if needed.

Our German Sheppard loves these

These cost a bit more than tennis balls, but they are so much nicer and longer lasting. For starters, they stay cleaner than tennis balls because they’re smooth rubber. Dirt won’t build up on them and if anything does stick, like grass or soil, it falls off once the dog slobber dries. They’re also thick, so they don’t fall apart or blow out like a normal tennis ball does in our dog’s jaws after 30 seconds. Our GS chomps on these like crazy and the only damage they’ve suffered is a crack that developed from the edge of the hole, but the crack is growing very slowly and none of these balls have totally failed yet. The balls do whistle when thrown ant high speed and that may help a dog track and locate it, but I’m not sure. Our neighbors hear the whistling too so it’s far from silent. Lastly the orange ball is easy to locate out in our yard, but the dark blue practically disappears.

They do lose their shape a little over time (like I said, she always has a ball in her mouth) they become a little oval in shape.
