A 12-inch hand-carved natural stone marble chess set — warm matte travertine border and light squares against polished warm amber-red marble dark squares, 32 Staunton-form stone pieces, 2 extra queens, and a foam-lined storage box — weighing 7.1 pounds total with free US shipping. This is the compact 12-inch version of the warmest color combination in the Speshstones chess catalog — a cool chess set where both stone materials sit within the warm earth-tone palette, creating a richly organic board that reads as a natural stone home object at any room level.

What This Travertine and Red Marble Chess Set Includes

  • 12-inch travertine-bordered board with warm amber-red marble dark squares — 11.81" × 11.81" × 0.04" exact, 7.1 lbs total: The board is a solid stone slab with a warm beige-cream travertine border surround and alternating travertine and red marble inlaid squares across the full 12-inch playing surface. The travertine border and light squares have the same heavy characteristic pitting confirmed across all travertine-bordered chess sets in this catalog — warm beige-cream matte surface with pronounced natural voids visible across the full border and all light squares. The red marble dark squares are polished — not the mirror-gloss of black marble but a warm amber glow that comes from the stone's natural amber-red translucent character. The warm amber-red veining of each dark square differs from its neighbors — no two dark squares share an identical surface pattern. The board reads as a warm natural stone object at any room level — both materials operate within the warm earth-tone palette creating an organic harmony rather than stark tonal contrast. The board base has an attached felt pad protecting any table surface. At 7.1 pounds the complete 12-inch set is compact and portable — the same confirmed weight as all other 12-inch sets in the Speshstones catalog and 3.4 pounds lighter than the 15-inch tournament format
  • 32 hand-carved Staunton-form stone pieces — 16 red amber marble + 16 travertine, all with felt base pads: Every piece is individually hand-carved from genuine natural stone in classic Staunton form. The dark side is warm amber-red marble — polished with swirling organic veining and the distinctive warm amber glow quality visible at close range. Each red marble piece has a different swirling veining arrangement — the King has completely different amber-red patterns than the Bishops or Rooks. The light side is natural travertine — warm beige-cream with heavy characteristic surface pitting visible across every carved piece surface. The contrast between sides is a material contrast — matte pitted travertine versus polished warm amber glow — rather than a stark tonal contrast, since both materials sit within the warm earth-tone palette. Every piece has an attached felt base pad protecting the board surface during play
  • 2 extra queens — 1 red amber marble + 1 travertine: Both extra queens are full-size hand-carved stone pieces at the full 2.5-inch Queen height — one warm amber-red marble queen and one matte travertine queen. Both match the playing queens exactly in height, form, and material and store with the full 34-piece set in the included foam-lined storage box
  • Foam-lined storage box — all 34 pieces protected: The complete set stores in a dedicated foam-lined storage box confirmed from the product image library — image alt text confirms "Foam-lined storage box with Travertine and Red Marble chess pieces." The foam construction holds all 34 pieces individually — 32 playing pieces plus both extra queens — preventing piece-to-piece contact during storage and transport, which is the primary cause of surface chipping in natural stone chess sets without dedicated protective storage
  • Compact 12-inch format at 7.1 pounds — the most portable warm-toned natural stone chess set in the Speshstones catalog: At 12 × 12 inches and 7.1 pounds this set is described in the official Speshstones size guide as perfect for casual games or limited space. The 7.1-pound total is 3.4 pounds lighter than the 15-inch Travertine+Red Tournament Set at the same warm amber-red marble and travertine color combination — making this the most accessible entry point to the warmest natural stone chess set color combination in the Speshstones catalog

Why the Travertine and Red Marble Combination Is the Warmest Board in the 12-Inch Catalog

Every 12-inch chess set in the Speshstones catalog pairs travertine with a second stone material. In the Black+Travertine and Travertine+Black sets that second material is black marble — a cool, dramatically contrasting dark stone. In the White+Travertine set it is white marble — a clean, neutral-toned polished stone. In the Oceanic+Travertine set it is oceanic marble — a warm grey-brown fossil stone. The Travertine+Red combination is unique because both materials are genuinely warm earth tones — the warm beige-cream travertine and the warm amber-red marble sit within the same warm palette, creating an organic material harmony that none of the other 12-inch combinations produce.

The red marble — called red marble in trade terminology — is a warm amber-caramel stone with swirling reddish-brown organic veining throughout the full stone body. In natural light the polished amber-red squares and pieces have a warm inner glow rather than a reflective surface gloss — a semi-translucent quality specific to this marble type where iron oxide mineral content creates the warm amber color throughout the stone. At 12-inch compact size this warm amber and travertine board fits on a coffee table, side table, or home office desk in any warm-toned interior without requiring a dedicated game surface. As a unique chess set this compact format delivers the same warm organic color combination as the 15-inch Travertine+Red Tournament Set in a more accessible size and price point — $125.89 versus $149.85 — making it the most accessible warm-stone chess set in the Speshstones catalog.

Materials & Craftsmanship

This handmade chess set is carved from two genuine natural warm-toned stones — natural travertine and warm amber-red marble — both within the earth-tone palette but with completely different surface finishes and geological origins. Natural travertine is a sedimentary limestone formed by the precipitation of calcium carbonate from natural spring water — creating the characteristic warm beige-cream color and heavy natural pitting confirmed across the board border, travertine light squares, and all 16 travertine pieces. The warm amber-red marble is a metamorphic rock formed under geological heat and pressure from limestone containing iron oxide and organic mineral inclusions that create the characteristic warm caramel-amber color and swirling organic veining throughout the full stone body. The polish applied to the red marble dark squares and all 16 red marble pieces brings the warm amber interior of the stone to a gloss that allows the stone's natural semi-translucent warm glow to show through — a fundamentally different visual quality from the mirror-gloss of black marble or the clean white polish of white marble. The board combines both stones — matte travertine border and light squares against polished warm amber-red marble dark squares — in a single solid inlaid stone slab. Every piece is individually hand-carved from genuine natural stone in classic Staunton form. No paint. No dye. No coating. The warm beige-cream of the travertine pieces comes from genuine sedimentary limestone material. The warm amber-caramel of the red marble pieces comes from genuine iron oxide mineral content throughout the full stone body. Natural variation between pieces confirms genuine stone — the pitting on each travertine piece and the swirling veining on each amber-red marble piece differ because each piece is carved from a separate block of natural stone.

How to Care for Your Travertine and Red Marble Chess Set

This natural stone chess set requires minimal care between play and display sessions. For the board, wipe the full 12-inch playing surface including the travertine border with a soft damp cloth after each session to remove fingerprint oils and dust from both the matte travertine areas and the polished amber-red marble squares. The polished red marble squares show fingerprint marks and dust against the warm amber surface — a quick damp cloth wipe after each session maintains the warm amber glow finish. The travertine border and light squares have heavy natural pitting that collects fine dust during display periods — use a soft brush with mild pH-neutral soap during weekly deeper cleaning to clear any debris from within the pitting on both the board travertine areas and all 16 travertine pieces. For the red marble pieces, wipe each piece with a soft damp cloth — the polished warm amber surface cleans in one pass. For the travertine pieces, use a soft brush with mild pH-neutral soap to clear the natural surface pitting. Do not use vinegar, lemon juice, citrus-based sprays, or bleach on any marble or travertine surface — these permanently etch the polished amber-red marble and dull the matte travertine on both board and pieces. Always lift pieces during play — never slide stone pieces across the board surface. Store all 34 pieces in the included foam-lined storage box between sessions to prevent piece-to-piece contact. Apply a food-safe penetrating stone sealer to all surfaces once or twice a year to maintain both stone finishes long-term.

Arthurian Fae Quest…say less.
Format: Kindle
A fae centered Arthurian tale unlike any I’ve read so far. The author did a great job at descriptive world building, with scenes easily playing out in my minds eye. There was plenty of action, suspense, and even a touch of horror. An enemies to lovers, slow burn romance, a quest, with plot twist and turns aplenty. There was a love triangle, which I’m not usually a fan of but, it played out well in this story line. The FMC, Morgan Pendragon, was so blatantly naïve, yet I typically expect as much in a ‘book one’ of a series, especially one that features a fairly sheltered princess. I was happy to read that in spite of this, she still showed a strong sense of morals, fire, and spine. Now our MMC? Kairos Draven, aka Void’s Edge. Oh, how I’m a sucker for a smoking’ hot grumpy warrior alpha with a witty mouth, and a strong sense of “touch her and die” attitude, so you know who held all my cards. That ending? Just made me swoon all the harder. Now add a battlecat that rivals the size of a horse…and well Ms. Briar Boleyn you have well and truly stolen my heart. I’m excited to see where the story goes from here, and follow along to see more of the characters growth. I went into this story fairly blind, and I think I enjoyed it all the more because of it. Once the story got going, it had me in an absolute chokehold and it was difficult to put down.

Not a bad start
Format: Kindle
3 stars Thank you Netgalley and Briar Boleyn for the ARC! A camelot/king Arthur retelling with fae. I was hooked by the idea of this book immediately and was eager to jump into this world. • slow burn • enemies to lovers • who did this to you Morgan Pendragon watched her mother die by her father's hand when she was just eight years old, hiding under the bed. Morgan is believed to have the tainted blood of the fae in her veins and is cast aside so that her fathers illegitimate son, Arthur, can become the king. She's seen his cruel treatment of the fae firsthand, so when he sends her on a journey to find a fae weapon she seizes the opportunity to do more with her life. Along the way, she finds more than she could have imagined. I don't know a whole lot about King Arthur and Camelot but I had a lot of fun with this story! The plot has some similar tropes to popular romantasy books (From blood and ash) but there's enough originality here that it doesn't feel like I'm reading a copy. I liked how the fae were different in appearance than what is typical in most fantasy books I've read. In this book they have blue hair, violet skin and a wide range of other characteristics. I thought that the world building was easy to follow and I could easily immerse myself into this world. After reading the blurb I kept wondering when she was going to go on the journey to find Excalibur and it doesn't happen until around the 45% mark. The story is a bit slow at times but starts to pick up once they begin their journey to find Excalibur. The John Wick style Inn was a fun concept that I enjoyed reading about. There are a lot of similarities to this and FBAA and I would have liked to have it be a little more different, but I'm hoping book two will have the story turn into something of its own. Overall I enjoyed reading this story and I'm looking forward to reading book two especially after that ending.

Unraveling Fate and Fae: A Captivating Journey in "Queen of Roses"
Format: Kindle
"Queen of Roses" by Briar Boleyn is a dark fantasy romance that masterfully combines elements of myth, magic, and romance with a captivating King Arthur retelling infused with a Fae twist. From its intricately woven plot to its compelling characters, this novel delivers an immersive reading experience that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next installment. At its core, "Queen of Roses" is an enchanting tale of forbidden love and destiny, featuring an exceptionally slow-burn romance that ignites with the intensity of an enemies-to-lovers trope. Against a backdrop of magic and mythical creatures, the story unfolds with tension, banter, and forced proximity, drawing readers into a world filled with love, friendships, self-discovery, and betrayal. While the novel excels in world-building, character development, and plot intricacies, some readers may yearn for a bit more fire and spice in certain aspects of the narrative. However, the promise of future developments in the series offers hope for an even more dynamic and engaging story to come. I know I personally cannot wait to get into book 2. With a cliffhanger ending that leaves hearts racing and minds reeling, "Queen of Roses" succeeds in immersing readers from start to finish. Its dark and twisted fantasy elements are expertly balanced with moments of adventure, action, and unexpected twists, keeping readers on the edge of their seats until the very last page. As the story delves into complex themes and explores the depths of its characters' struggles and desires, it's important to note that "Queen of Roses" may contain triggering content. Readers are advised to check the trigger warnings before diving into this captivating tale. Overall, "Queen of Roses" is a must-read for fans of dark fantasy romance, offering a mesmerizing journey that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next chapter in the series. With its lush prose, intricate storytelling, and unforgettable characters, this novel is sure to leave a lasting impression on all who venture into its enchanted world. Right from the start, I was drawn in by the prologue!!!
Format: Paperback, Format: Paperback
Queen of Roses (Blood of a Fae #1) by Briar Boleyn Genre General Fiction ( Adult), Romance, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Dark Romance “More primordial than the stars. My name was on his lips as he promised unspeakable darkness to any who came between us.” Right from the start, I was drawn in by the prologue!!! I’m a big fan of “touch her, and you die” vibes, but I mean, what’s also not to love about a unique Arthurian retelling with gender twists, a treacherous royal court, a dangerous quest, magical Fae & mystical monsters, entwined with a bit of spice! Morgan, Princess of Pendrath and true heir to the throne has spent most of her life dimming her light to feel safe and to make others comfortable. She is treated as an outcast in the court and repressed by her family due to the blood of the Fae within her and forced to join the Temple of the Three as a priestess in training to one day replace Merlin. Her brother, King Arthur, who reminds me of Joffrey from Game of Thrones, later tells her that he has other plans and offers her a choice of the Temple or to marry her off for political gain, unless… that is, she can journey through the great unknown and return with a long-lost fae weapon with enchanted powers known as Excalibur. Her quest begins with a roguish crew that includes the mysterious, arrogant, and heart-tuggingly handsome Captain of the Royal Guard, Kairos Draven, whom she can’t decide if she wants to stab or indulge in pleasure with. Along the way are plenty of surprises, mystical creatures, and betrayal, all while Morgan uncovers more of the truth about herself and who she can trust. This book had intriguing storylines and lovable characters that kept me turning pages and wanting more. I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds and comes together in book 2, Court of Claws, which I just started reading!! Read if you’re into- Dark Fantasy/Romance Slow–Burn Question Everything Magic and Action Fae Arthurian Legend Stabby/Broken FFC Morally Gray MMC Forced Proximity Queen of Roses is perfect for Holly Black, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Sarah J. Maas fans. Please check the trigger warnings page in the table of contents before reading this book.

3.5 stars, A little boring to say the least.
Format: Kindle
Wow so I'm not sure where to begin on this one. This was a very different take on the legend of Arthur and Excalibur. This is told from the point of view of Morgan the sister of Arthur. Honestly the first 50% of this book is world building and character building which unfortunately was super boring for me. Morgan to me was a female MC that had a hard time in believing in herself. Sometimes taking too long to understand exactly what was going on around her. Draven was also a different male MC, like I couldn't put my finger on him and what he was all about. It was not until the last 10% of the book did we get some answers on the mystery that is Draven. The other 50% of the book centered around this big journey with everyone having a different motive. We see a spark of magic around this time that had me excited but then we never expanded upon that and what it could mean for the female MC. I feel like I want to read the second book just to see where this goes, but the spice was probably a 2 out of 5. Side characters are ok, Lancelet was fun but I almost felt like I wanted more.
