Blauw symboliseert de hemel, kansen en het idealisme van het volk. Wit staat voor vrede, wijsheid en geluk, terwijl rood het bloed vertegenwoordigt dat is vergoten voor de vrijheid van het land. De vlag werd voor het eerst aangenomen in 1848 en weerspiegelt de progressieve waarden van Costa Rica, dat bekendstaat om zijn stabiliteit, democratie en ecologische focus.
