In zijn prille jeugd sloeg Fernand de wijngaarden over. Tijdens de oogst volgde hij zijn vader en klom naar de kleine familiepers om het sap te proeven. Zijn voorouders verbouwden al tientallen jaren granen en wijnstokken, maar Fernand heeft een duidelijke voorkeur voor werk in de wijngaard. Aan het einde van de Tweede Wereldoorlog ondergaat de Elzasser wijngaard een opleving en in 1949 begint het grote wijnavontuur in de familie. De druiven voor deze witte wijn zijn afkomstig van drie percelen in Rorschwihr op ongeveer twintig kilometer van Colmar in de Elzas. Hier zijn zanderige kleibodems met een hoog kalkgehalte te vinden. De wijngaarden liggen op een lichte helling die gericht is op het zuiden en oosten. Daardoor heerst er een perfect klimaat. De druivenstokken verschillen van 30, 33 en 37 jaar oud.Een Pinot Blanc met een stevig karakter
Na de handmatige oogst rijpt worden de hele trossen geperst. Daarop volgt een koude schilweking op ongeveer acht à tien graden. De gisting vindt plaats in roestvrijstalen tanks op een gecontroleerde temperatuur van 18-20 graden. Tot slot ruimt de wijn nog zes tot acht maanden op de lie. Hierdoor krijgt hij een stevig karakter en meer diepgang dan andere Pinot Blanc. De geur is hierdoor ook fenomenaal, veel tonen van rode appel, rijpe peren, groene limoen en wat kruidige ondertoon van munt en venkel. De smaak van deze Fernand Engel Pinot Blanc Reserve is rond, rijp en vooral diepgaand. In de aanzet veel wit fruit, gele pruimen, rijpe kweek peer en een beetje specerijen.Shipping Notes

It's How Wars End That Become Important Afterward

The twentiety century taught us a lot about wars and how they end. World War I showed us that making strong demands on the defeated (who didn't admit defeat to their own people) set the stage for the next big war.
World War II was fought until the Unconditional Surrender of the Germans and Japanese. Something that thinkers still debate as having made them fight all that harder.
VietNam was fought with no clear end in sight, and "another VietNam" entered our language.
The first Gulf War was ended when Colin Powell and Bush II debated how to end the war. They stopped before they had to go in and see what the Sunni's, Shiite's and Kurds made of the power vacuum left by the removal of Saddam would have created. Bush II is learning about this now.
This is the second revised edition of this book, originally published in 1971 and then updated in 1991 and now 2005 to reflect happenings in new wars.
Still some of the old wars had interesting insights that I didn't know before, such as how Finland, originally on Germany's side against Russia, made a peace with Russia and kicked the Germans out before they became a Russian province. Great Book.
