De kralen hebben een diameter van 0,7 tot 0,8 cm.

Dit kralensnoer dient vooral om mantra's te tellen tijdens het zingen of reciteren. Het werkt vergelijkbaar met een rozenkrans bij katholieken. Malas kunnen gemaakt zijn van halfedelstenen, parels, bodhizaden of hout en worden gebruikt om aandachtig mantra’s, gebeden, neerbuigingen of rondgangen te begeleiden. Het koord bestaat uit negen draden, die samen Boeddha Vajradhara en de acht bodhisattva's symboliseren. De grote kraal aan het einde staat voor de wijsheid die leegte realiseert, terwijl de cilindervormige kraal daarboven de leegte zelf vertegenwoordigt. Samen herinneren deze symbolen eraan dat alle innerlijke obstakels overwonnen zijn.

Een mala bevat 108 kralen, een getal dat wordt gezien als geschikt om mantra’s mee te reciteren of te chantten. Bij dit ritueel is het van belang dat je gedachten zuiver zijn. De herhaling van de mantra verdiept de ervaring en helpt je om in stilte en bewustzijn te komen. De klank die ontstaat werkt als een spirituele indruk die je in jezelf kunt voelen. Mantra’s doorlopen verschillende stadia, waarbij je jouw bewustzijn stap voor stap kan verfijnen.
