Het heeft een brede cluster van rechtopstaande stengels en heel donkergroen blad dat verspreid is over de hele stam en zijn sterk gegolfd. De scheuten worden vertakt in de bovenste delen van de plant.

Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Fastigiata' geeft de voorkeur aan een standplaats uit de volle zon en gedijt op iedere bodem, mits deze voldoende vochtig is. In het geval de bodem te arm of te droog is zullen de naalden vaal worden en verliest de plant zijn gezonde uitstraling. Hij verdraagt een temperatuur tot -20 °C.
