Deze rode wijn uit de Gamla serie is één van de nieuwste projecten van wijnmaker Victor Schoenfeld. Hij wilde een Israëlische rode wijn maken met de meest voorkomende blend op aarde de Cabernet Sauvignon en de Merlot druif. Nou dat is meer dan gelukt en deze rode wijn is een stukje vakwerk. Maar dat gaat niet van zelf, jaren lang heeft Victor getest en gekeken waar deze druiven het beste groeien in Israël. Het is uiteindelijk het Galilea gebied geworden omdat daar de beste appellatie van Israël ligt. In het noordelijk gedeelte op een hoogte van wel 1200 meter liggen de Cabernet Sauvignon en Merlot wijngaarden. Met diepe wortels in de vulkanische grond krijgen de druiven hun eigen indentiteit.

Volledige handmatige oogst voor deze rode wijn van Gamla

Als beide druiven alles hebben kunnen opnemen uit de rijke bodem worden ze geheel met de hand geoogst. Tros voor tros wordt gecontroleerd en in kleine kratjes gelegd. Dit doet men om schade tijdens het transport te minimaliseren en om het zuiverste sap te verkrijgen. Wijnmaker Victor Schoenfeld wil namelijk met deze rode Gamla wijn laten zien hoe mooi het sap is uit de Golan Heights. Beide druiven worden apart gevinifieerd waarna de blend wordt gemaakt. De gehele wijn rijpt maar liefst twaalf maanden op zowel Franse als Amerikaanse houten vaten. Dat geeft deze rode wijn uit Israël zijn bijzondere karakter.

De smaak van de Gamla Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot

Zodra de kruk van de fles gaat begint het feest, veel rijkdom van zwart fruit en mooie tonen van vanille en eiken hout spatten de fles uit. Bij het inschenken zien we een mooie diepe rode kleur met paarse schittering. We pakken door en we steken onze neus in het glas en we ruiken een samenspel tussen rijpe kersen en cassis met daarbij lichte vanilletonen en een mooie kruidigheid. In de mond geeft deze rode Gamla een warm mondgevoel met veel rijkdom van zwart fruit, kruiden, eiken hout, chocolade, samen met hints van bloemen en Franse eik.
