Schilderde Ruyten tot dan toe vooral stadsgezichten, in Nederland voegde hij riviergezichten, havens en ijsgezichten aan zijn repertoire toe. Hoewel in dit laatstgenoemde genre Schelfhout duidelijk zijn inspirator is, wijkt zijn werk op een zeer origniele en on-Hollandse manier af van dat van zijn grote voorbeeld. Na 1870 keerde hij terug tot het schilderen van stadshoekjes en markten.
