Ze lijken wel wat op appelbloesem, de roze-witte bloemen van Clematis (bosrank) armandii ‘Apple Blossom’. Deze wintergroene klimplant met glanzend, donkergroen blad bloeit al vroeg in het voorjaar, vanaf maart tot april. De bloemen hebben een frisse, aangename geur. De snelgroeiende, winterharde klimplant kan een hoogte van 4 tot 6 meter bereiken en siert elke muur, schutting of pergola.

Clematis armandii ‘Apple Blossom’ aanplanten: wanneer en hoe

Plant ‘Apple Blossom’ in bij voorkeur in februari/maart of september/oktober. Geef hem een zonnige tot halfschaduwrijke plek; hoe meer zon, des te meer bloemen. Plant hem het liefst in vruchtbare, goed doorlatende grond. Dat is grond waarin het water snel wegzakt. Houd bij het planten ongeveer 30 cm afstand van de muur, schutting of pergola. Maak het plantgat 10 cm dieper dan de hoogte van de kluit om de wortels te beschermen tegen uitdroging en zonlicht. Om dezelfde reden breng je na het planten het liefst een laag van bladaarde of compost aan. Of plant vaste planten of bodembedekkers rond de clematis.

Verzorging van ‘Apple Blossom’

Geef ‘Apple Blossom’ regelmatig water, vooral tijdens droge periodes, om de grond vochtig te houden. Voor een gezonde en rijke bloei is het raadzaam hem jaarlijks in het voorjaar bemesten met een organische meststof. ‘Apple Blossom’ hoeft niet per se gesnoeid te worden maar als hij te groot wordt kun je hem direct na de bloei snoeien. Knip dode of beschadigde takken dan ook weg. Clematis is giftig voor mensen en huisdieren. Omdat het sap van de plant huidirritatie kan veroorzaken is het aan te bevelen tijdens het snoeien tuinhandschoenen te dragen.

Deze klimplant hecht zich niet en heeft dus een rek, trellis of gaaspaneel nodig voor houvast. Je kunt ook draden spannen. Met binddraad leid je de jonge scheuten omhoog.

Mooie combinaties met ‘Apple Blossom’

De roze-witte bloemen van ‘Apple Blossom’ combineren perfect met paarsbloeiende clematissen, met rozen (bijvoorbeeld Rosa ‘New Dawn’) en met klimplanten zoals kamperfoelie, Akebia quinata of Toscaanse jasmijn. Of zet rond de plant vaste planten, zoals Geranium of Pachysandra. Zij zorgen niet alleen voor een mooi groen effect maar voorkomen ook dat de kluit van de clematis uitdroogt.
