Wijngaarden en regio
De basis van deze wijn ligt in de heuvels rond Orvieto, waar hoogte, bodem en geschiedenis samen voor een opvallend eigen profiel zorgen.
- • Ligging: De wijngaarden liggen bij Orvieto in Umbrië op 320 m hoogte, wat helpt om rijpheid en frisheid beter in balans te houden.
- • Bodem: Zand en klei vormen hier de basis, met veel mariene sedimenten en fossiele resten van schelpen en oesters. Dat geeft deze herkomst een uitgesproken eigen signatuur binnen het gebied.
- • Expositie: De percelen liggen op zuidoost en zuidwest, waardoor de druiven veel zon krijgen en gelijkmatig kunnen uitrijpen.
- • Klimaat: Het mediterrane klimaat zorgt voor voldoende rijpheid, terwijl de hoogte voorkomt dat de wijn log of zwaar wordt.
- • Historische plek: Decugnano ligt in het oudste deel van het Orvieto gebied, wat deze wijn extra karakter geeft nog vóór de eerste slok is genomen.
Vinificatie en rijping
A.D. 1212 wordt gemaakt met een duidelijke focus op evenwicht, zodat kracht en verfijning hier niet tegenover elkaar staan maar juist samenvallen.
- • Vergisting in roestvrijstaal: De wijn wordt vergist in roestvrijstalen tanks, waardoor het fruit en de opbouw van de blend helder en precies blijven.
- • Rijping op Frans eiken: 50% van de wijn rijpt 12 maanden in Franse barriques. Dat geeft extra diepte, meer structuur en een verfijnde houtinvloed zonder het karakter van de wijn te overstemmen.
- • Alcohol van 15%: Met 15% alcohol heeft deze wijn duidelijke kracht, maar juist de rijping en de zorgvuldige blend zorgen ervoor dat die intensiteit verzorgd en beheerst overkomt.
- • Historische ontwikkeling: De eerste jaargang verscheen in 1988 onder de naam IL Decugnano dei Barbi. Sinds 2015 draagt deze wijn de naam A.D. 1212, nog nadrukkelijker gekoppeld aan de geschiedenis van het domein.
Druivensamenstelling
De blend van A.D. 1212 bestaat uit 3 blauwe druivenrassen die samen zorgen voor diepte, structuur en een heel eigen interpretatie van rood uit Umbrië.
- • Syrah – Orvieto, Umbrië: Syrah brengt extra intensiteit en helpt mee aan het krachtige, donkere karakter van de blend.
- • Cabernet Sauvignon – Orvieto, Umbrië: Cabernet Sauvignon versterkt de structuur en geeft deze cuvée extra sérieux en lengte.
- • Montepulciano – Orvieto, Umbrië: Montepulciano maakt de wijn voller en completer, waardoor de blend stevig geworteld blijft in Midden-Italië.
Proefnotities en serveertips
In het glas toont deze wijn een diepe rode kleur met meteen een serieuze uitstraling. De geur opent gelaagd, met donker fruit, rijpe kruiden en een verfijnde houttoets die mooi verweven zit in het geheel. Daarna volgt een volle, krachtige smaak waarin concentratie en balans hand in hand gaan, zonder dat de wijn zwaar of stroef wordt. De tannines zijn stevig maar verzorgd, en de afdronk houdt lang aan met een elegante, harmonieuze lijn. Dit is zo’n wijn die je opent bij een diner dat net wat meer mag zijn dan doordeweeks.
- • Serveertemperatuur: Schenk deze wijn rond 16 tot 18 °C, omdat in dat bereik de balans tussen kracht, kruidigheid en houtinvloed het mooist overeind blijft.
- • Gerechten: Deze Umbria Rosso IGT past het best bij geroosterd rundvlees, lam, wildgerechten of harde gerijpte kazen, omdat zulke gerechten voldoende diepte hebben voor zijn concentratie en structuur.

Quality Thumping Boombox

I've been a longtime user of JBL products, but the Boombox has been my favorite speaker in their entire lineup. The built in handle, waterproof design, and fantastic battery life are what drew me to it in the first place. I owned the original Boombox for nearly 8 years. It survived dozens of camping trips in extreme heat, and was tested by FL beach trips, one of which ended in a violent rainstorm. It never failed me and could hold up to any abuse, which is why I have no problems recommending their Boombox lineup to anyone.
My excitement for the Boombox 4 grew when I found out it would use an easily replaceable battery, simply by popping off the bottom cover. I had to replace the internal battery of my BB1 after 7.5 years, and it was a terrible experience that took around two hours, and was very frustrating at times. I told myself I would never buy another Bluetooth speaker that didn't have a hot-swap style battery compartment. I'm happy to see that the new speaker lineup does this.
SPECS
The new JBL Boombox 4 has significantly more power than the original model from 8 years ago. We're talking a jump from 40 watts to 200 RMS watts on battery power. That, combined with the larger drivers let me know that I was in for quite an upgrade. If you already have the 3rd gen BB3, I would think this wouldn't be a significant upgrade for you, but coming from the OG BB1 it most certainly was for me! The ports on the rear flip cover are power and USB Type C.
APPEARANCE
After unboxing the new Boombox 4 I could tell it was a bit larger than the old Boombox 1, but not by much. I'm happy to see JBL go back to a handle that appears to be a part of the speaker, instead of looking like it was thrown on as an add-on, like that of the Boombox 3's handle. It's also comfortable to hold, and the weight distribution of this speaker is spot-on. I can't tell that this new speaker is 1.5 pounds heavier than the BB1. Overall it's a very good looking speaker. The pictures don't do it much justice. You need to see it in person to really appreciate the craftsmanship.
INDOOR LISTENING
My initial listening experience with the new BB4 was ear-to-ear grin worthy. I immediately realized this upgrade was legit! There's so much more lower end grunt. While playing indoors at lower volumes, I found that for certain music genres I really appreciated the low-end bass boost mode. It provides the thump you crave, even at low levels. As you raise the volume up to anything over half, I find the bass boost unnecessary, and perhaps even a bit overpowering. That's likely subjective to each persons personal tastes, as well as music genres. It's nice to have the option to use it when you want it.
OUTDOOR LISTENING
My OG BB1 was my favorite go-to speaker for outdoor Bluetooth music sessions, and this one excels even more at that. The BB4 has significantly more power on offer, so it's easier to fill any space with fantastic sounding music. With our modest sized corner lot, I find that keeping its volume around the 50% point is plenty to fill our yard with great sound, while not being distracting to any neighbors who may be around outdoors. What impressed me most with the new speaker is how much further and clearer both the highs and low frequencies come through. With the BB1, once I walked away more than 20 feet the bass really fell off and wasn't too noticeable, but with the BB4 I can still hear the low notes from that distance. I'm truly impressed at what the BB4 can do as an outdoor speaker. To respect my neighbors, I didn't run the Boombox 4 at maximum output, but for the brief time I had it up around 80% it was obvious that this speaker is plenty loud for most people.
AURACAST
Next I paired the Boombox 4 with my PartyBox 520, using Auracast. I turned on both speakers, started playing music from one, then hit the Auracast button on each. Within 5-8 seconds they paired up and were in sync with each other. Obviously pairing a speaker like the Boombox 4 along with a much larger one like the Partybox 520 is going to create a situation where you mostly hear the larger speaker. This leads me to the decision that the best way to utilize a setup like this is to run one indoors and the other outside. For a nice sized party, the Boombox would serve well indoors and the PartyBox would be perfect outside.
CONS
If I had to knock JBL for anything with the new BB4, it would be their decision to omit the 3.5mm aux port. This was a feature all the previous models had. I know there's a USB Type C port for lossless audio playback, but it doesn't work with a Type C to 3.5mm aux adapter. I enjoy projector movie and game nights, and I used my BB1 for the audio when viewing content with the projector by way of a simple aux cable.
I did a bit of research and discovered that my Google Chromecast has Bluetooth audio playback available, but not the Roku streaming stick that I've always used for the projector. I was able to connect the Boombox 4 to my Chromecast and use it to play the audio, so I'm thankful that works! Still would have loved a 3.5mm aux port.
SUMMARY
JBL continues to impress with their newer lineup of speakers. As bittersweet as it was to let it go, I'm happy to be rid of the Boombox 1, as the Boombox 4 is an amazing upgrade in nearly every way. I won't have to worry about complex battery swaps in the future, which is probably the main reason I went for the upgrade. I'm happy with the extra power this speaker puts out. For anyone looking for an all-purpose, outdoor Bluetooth speaker, this is the one! No need to worry about water or dust interrupting your music sessions. Stop thinking about buying a Boombox 4 and just pull the trigger!

HANDS DOWN THE BEST BLUETOOTH SPEAKER ON THE MARKET. I have bought pretty much every BT speaker on the market (obsessed). I'm an audiophile and my main system is worth 10s of thousands. I had multiple jbls, bose, and a whole slew of different brands i dont care to list. I gave away most of them to justify buying new toys (my friends love it lol). I am not giving this thing away EVER. All my previous complaints have been addressed. Replaceable battery, stable base, lighter, smaller and double the output. For indoors i use a custom EQ to tame the bass. Because it is RIDICULOUS (alot of overhead!). I crank up the treble to sharpen it up and I find that 30% volume will fill most indoor spaces with excellent, long playtime and sharp music while barely trying! It has plenty of overhead to deliver excellent volume and presence for the beach and any outdoor event up to 60 people. This is the perfect setup. Need more coverage? order a second one for stereo (i will). This is the end game Bluetooth speaker. Everything else is a mere shadow of this beast regardless of price. JBL knocked this out of the park. My search has ended.

Bass Forward, Heavy physicality, Excellent upgrade!

I would like to start this by saying that I’m having to rewrite this as my first one violated community guidelines so I guess. But I wanted to preface that I have owned at least 1 of every generation of the JBL Boombox Series (1 OG BB, 2pair Gen 2, 2 pair Gen 3, 2 for the current JBLboombox 4!!
I’m also extremely into audio and technology and speakers are an expertise of mine! I personally think that this was the biggest leap forward in the series and although I am still disappointed we reverted back to a 2-way system instead of the pioneering 3-way set up and that is a bummer but as far as feeling the music, want bass? Can’t get enough. These Boombox 4 CRANK that low Freq and can sustain a sub 40 Hz base note on battery for extended periods of time. I had no idea that physics would allow such a small item to create base like it does and that’s given proper acoustics of the room of the hallway ~~you know, you put your speaker somewhere and you’re like it sounds the best right here. That’s the soundstage (ish) but wow! The two base boost options are awesome and remind me of the OG BB with what was called “home and outdoor mode”
When I’m rocking my stereo pair of Boombox 4s I basically always have the bass boost feature turned on the deep base (mode 1) and the other option (mode 2) is to have “punchy base” however I don’t recommend that one. Overall super happy with Bluee & Squad box! I will say that the only lighting feature on it is to me a very useful and fun incorporation of LEDs into a portable speaker as the color whether orange or white will show you from a distance what bass mode you’re in but also, you can verify it by a glance and rockin’ these dark orange glows, white punches or nothing at all. :)
Oh and the Original JBL I got in 2017 is still working like a charm in a buddy’s garage of mine (battery is shot, must stay plugged in to use)
But JBL will last a long time, there’s such a big variety to choose from on the Bluetooth market these days that you can find a speaker for any size occasion or prefer preference.
Lastly…✅✅✅✅ AURACAST ✅✅✅✅HAS BEEN FLAWLESS!! 🤩 as I had connection issues with every type of linking JBL’s had to offer since Connect… so JBLs Connect, Connect+, partyboost, ect ….. no good! ESPECIALLY in a dang stereo pair. Now when I turn on both speakers, they automatically link into stereo mode and it is simple as can be and they haven’t even hiccups once for the hundreds of hours they’ve played music already.
Well I hope this finds someone who I intent it too,

I ran out of stars!!!

It's hard to know where to begin when talking about the JBL Boombox 4. Let me begin by stating I'm no stranger to JBL speakers of which I have several. I've had 3 extremes, 2 charges, and 1 Big Boombox #1. This boombox 4 is another beast all together. Let me also add I'm also a recording/ mixing engineer so I have pretty good ears for music and how things should sound. I was literally overwhelmed by the sheer size and essence of the BB4. It was like trying to take control of a baby elephant that had somehow gotten loose. It almost seems twice the size of the Boombox 1-3 but it is fatter around middle which gives it a chunkier appearance. It really is a beauty to behold especially in blue like mine. The sound is better than the others but to get that fat bass you have to push the bass (B) button to the first level. Push it again and bass as well as vocals and instruments are pushed more to the forefront and more in your face. I don't play music loud and usually stick with smooth jazz styles. Everything I've played has sounded good with the bass button engaged. I can only compare the BB4 to the BB1. The BB1 is still very good with good bass response but the BB4 blows it out of the water. I could've lived with the BB1 but I know one day the battery is going to die and I'd be stuck with a very large door stop. I refuse to go through the stress of trying to replace the battery in another JBL speaker which was pure hell and it still never worked again. When I heard about the new batteries and how easy you could swap them out I was sold. I almost got the extreme 4 but the Boombox 4 had a much bigger and expansive sound. Reviewers have reported that the stereo spread is non-existent. Not true. I hear very good stereo separation. Not exactly as wide as two separate speakers but very good as it is. I really didn't need another speaker especially one so pricey but the ability to easily remove the battery says this speaker will be around for a very long time. At this price point
the speaker case could and should have been included with the purchase.
