Mus is wees en woont in Zeeburgerdam. Op een dag wordt het havenstadje opgeschrikt door plunderende piraten. Hun leider, Ramon, maakte ooit deel uit van een beruchte bende: De 5 Slangen. Mus weet gelukkig op tijd te ontsnappen en gaat hulp halen. Met alleen een bedeltje en de vage aanwijzing van een vrouw om kapitein Kwaadbaard te zoeken, gaat ze op weg. Kwaadbaard was vroeger ook lid van De 5 Slangen en is de enige die Ramon kan verjagen. Maar Kwaadbaard vinden is één ding, hem overtuigen om het zwaard weer op te pakken is een tweede. Gelukkig heeft Mus een belangrijke troef achter de hand…
