Eind 1984 keren twee jonge Guatemalteekse broers, die verbannen waren naar de Verenigde Staten, terug naar Guatemala om deel te nemen aan een jeugdkamp voor Joodse kinderen in een bos op de hoogvlaktes. Hun ouders hebben hen ernaartoe gestuurd, zodat ze hun wortels niet zouden vergeten, want ze weten weinig van hun geboorteland en spreken nauwelijks nog Spaans. Maar op een ochtend blijkt het kamp een nog veel sinisterdere plek te zijn dan de kinderen al dachten – iedereen zal zijn eigen manier moeten vinden om te overleven. De redenen en gevolgen van deze episode uit de kindertijd van de verteller zullen pas jaren later duidelijk worden door toevallige ontmoetingen met een Salinger-lezer die advocaat werd in Parijs en in Berlijn met een voormalig hoofdinstructeur uit het kamp, die rondliep met een slang in zijn zak en een enorme tarantula op zijn arm. Door verleden en heden, realiteit en fictie met elkaar te verweven, schept Eduardo Halfon een verhaal vol symbolen die de fundamenten van zijn identiteit raken: het strikte en rigoureuze raamwerk van de Joodse religie en de moederlijke boezem van Guatemala.

I really really wanted to enjoy this book and was looking forward to reading it. However there were just one too many convoluted plot points, sentences just did not flow nicely at times, and I was left with a lot of confusion on my end. I think it has the bones of being a great story but seems like it was rushed and I had to push myself to finish the last of the book and was left with an unsatisfying ending. Hardly an auspicious beginning. Each member has their own path and purpose in the pack. Their interactions and the resulting narrative are so well-written that I found it difficult to put down. There is a cliffhanger that will have you reaching for book 2 as you finish, so make sure you have it on hand.

I'm not really into mafia books but I love Roxy Collin's other series so I decided to give it a try. It had the same great romance, spice, swoon-worthy characters and exciting plot that are her signature. Arben was my favorite, although it was a bit sudden how quickly he changed from ignoring her to wanting to be pack. There were almost too many twists/layers of lies to keep track of but I'm looking forward to reading the other books. The only thing that detracted from the story for me was the need for a bit more proofreading. It was mentioned that Kelly is a female and male at different points, leading me to think she changed her mind at some point about the character's gender but didn't go back and edit it to align in all places. Like another reviewer pointed out, step siblings are different than half siblings. They are incorrectly referred to as step siblings because they (allegedly) share the same biological dad. There are a few other typos as well but those aren't a big deal.
