Zou jij je leven voor een ander wagen? Deze vraag is niet te beantwoorden als je niet voor de keuze hebt gestaan. Voor Italiaanse wielerheld Gino Bartoli - drie keer winnaar van de Giro d’Italia en twee keer de Tour de France -  is deze vraag wel te beantwoorden. Tijdens de donkere jaren van fascistisch bewind smokkelde Gino Bartali tijdens zijn training op de fiets voor het verzet valse identiteitspapieren. Mede dankzij zijn moed werden 800 Joden - waaronder veel kinderen - gered van deportatie. 

Voor de meeste fietsers zou het winnen van een grote wedstrijd zoals de Tour de France of de Giro d'Italia de ultieme prestatie van een sportcarrière vertegenwoordigen. Voor de kampioen wegwielrenner Gino Bartali was het winnen van beide competities—drie keer en twee keer, respectievelijk—slechts een onderdeel van zijn nalatenschap als zowel atleet als humanitair.

Geboren in Florence op deze dag in 1914, was Bartali niet alleen een getalenteerde atleet, maar gebruikte hij zijn beroemdheid en vaardigheid als wielrenner om mensen te helpen die bedreigd werden met deportatie, of erger. Nadat hij op 13-jarige leeftijd met competitief fietsen begon, won hij meer dan 180 wedstrijden, waardoor hij in de jaren dertig en veertig een lokale held werd. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog stelde zijn status hem in staat om ongehinderd door oorlogsofficials door het Toscaanse en Umbriëse platteland te fietsen, waardoor het mogelijk was om documenten in de stuurpen van zijn fiets te verstoppen voor Joden die vervalste identiteitskaarten nodig hadden om hun leven te redden. Hij ging door met dit werk, ook nadat hij werd ondervraagd en bedreigd door agenten van Mussolini's regering.

Pas in 2003 begonnen verhalen naar boven te komen over Bartali's stille heldendom tijdens de oorlog, waaronder het verbergen van een Joodse familie in zijn kelder. Zijn eigen vrijheid en veiligheid op het spel zetten om anderen te beschermen, maakte Bartali van zijn sport een race om levens te redden.

I have received this chair just today and would like to give my first impressions of it. Height is super adjustable as well as the foot rest. My desk is very tall (~34 inches vs standard ~29 inches) and does not suit a standard height chair. This chair's height is enough to sit comfortably at mybut also still having adjustment to be even higher. Lumbar support is a manual adjustment that can be adjusted by sliding the lumbar piece up or down and it seems it can be tiled as well. No reclining feature or slight backrest tilt adjustment. I'm used to my chairs reclining so it feels a little awkward siting in a flat base and straight backrest. I feel like I'm sitting too forward or leaning forward slightly but is probably something I can get use to. Easy to put together and feels very sturdy. Plastic parts of chair are made from a really sturdy plastic, like playhouse plastic materials. Wheels roll around carpet easily. Mesh seems to be a strong material, though the mesh feels kind itchy on bare skin. Overall, I think this is a good chair to get if you're needing a tall chair for a good value and can sacrifice no backrest tilt.

But it's perfect for those of us who are vertically challenged. I love that it glides easily on my hardwood floors and that it turns 360 degrees. The chair comes in numerous luscious colors, so take your pick! It is very sturdy, has good lumbar support, and the seat and seat back are very comfortable. And the arms flip up, which was an absolute must when I was shopping for this chair. I got it on sale, too -- $109.00 -- and I'm delighted with this purchase.
