De kleur van rookkwarts is gevoelig voor hitte en zal verbleken bij temperaturen boven de 200-300°C of bij langdurige blootstelling aan UV-licht. Dit kleurverlies kan worden teruggedraaid door gammastraling van de kristallen.

Rookkwarts kan in veel verschillende omgevingen worden aangetroffen, maar is het meest kenmerkend voor holtes in stollingsgesteenten en pegmatieten. De kwartskorrels in graniet en aanverwante rotsen zijn vaak rokerig.
