Dendrieten worden meestal gevormd door mangaanoxide. Sommige van de andere mangaanoxiden die dendrieten vormen, bevinden zich in de hollandiet ngroep van mangaanoxiden. Het zijn coronadiet, cryptomeleen en hollandiet. Twee andere mangaanoxide-mineralen die dendrieten vormen, zijn romanechiet en todorokiet.

Het woord dendriet komt van het Griekse woord "dendron", wat boom betekent. Vandaar de naam Dendritisch of Dendrietkwarts.
