Hij liet Hermes het vee van Agenor, Europa’s vader, naar de zeekust drijven, op een plek waarvan hij wist dat ze er met haar vriendinnen altijd ging wandelen. Zelf voegde hij zich bij de kudde, vermomd in de gedaante van een prachtige sneeuwwitte stier. Europa zwichtte. Dat Zeus vervolgens met haar wegzwom, had ze eerst niet in de gaten. Toen Zeus uit de zee opklom, nabij Gortyna op het eiland Kreta, veranderde hij in een adelaar en verkrachtte Europa in een wilgenbosje naast een bron.

Zo ging het ook met de terechte en mooie gedachte die na de Tweede Wereldoorlog ontstond en die erop gericht was om de demonen van de 20ste eeuw achter ons te laten en op het Europees continent een platform van samenwerking tot stand te brengen. Gaandeweg is die gedachte ontvoerd en van haar oorspronkelijke inspiratie weggeleid naar de stichting van een reuze macht opslorpende eenheidsstaat: de Europese Unie. In dit boek legt Gerolf Annemans uit hoe dat in zijn werk is gegaan, waarom een EU-kritische benadering uiterst dringend en noodzakelijk is, en legt hij ook de principes uit van wat de samenwerking in Europa zou moeten zijn. Aan het eind schetst hij een samenhangend alternatief voor de huidige toestand. Europa en de Europese Unie zijn niet hetzelfde, ook al worden die woorden systematisch met elkaar verward. Europa verdient namelijk beter.
