Het eiwit- mineralen- en vetgehalte is dubbel zo hoog als dat van andere vruchten. In Japan wordt ume 'de blauwe diamant'' genoemd.

Er wordt gezegd dat het citroenzuur in ume het suikeroverschot in het bloed omzet in bruikbare energie. Picrinezuur eveneens dat rijkelijk aanwezig is.
