De soort Armadillidium flavoscutatum komt oorspronkelijk uit warmere regio’s van Zuid‑Europa, vooral het Middellandse Zeegebied. In zijn natuurlijke leefgebieden – zoals open loofbossen, garrigue‑zones of rotsachtige omgevingen – leeft hij bij voorkeur onder stenen, tussen wortels en dicht bij de grond, waar hij zich terugtrekt in spleten en onder bladeren. In tegenstelling tot veel andere pissebedsoorten is hij niet strikt nachtactief, maar kan hij ook overdag vaak worden waargenomen – vooral bij stabiele klimaatomstandigheden in het terrarium.

Hun hoog-contrast kleurpatroon is opvallend: het lichaam is meestal donkerbruin of grijspaars, met een duidelijk contrasterend geel‑okerkleurig kopschild en soms lichtere segmentranden. Deze kleurkenmerken, die al zichtbaar zijn bij jonge dieren, maken het een populaire soort onder verzamelaars en natuurliefhebbers.

Omgeving: Mediterrane opstelling met schors, stenen en droog mos
