In 1958 bereikte hij dit doel met zijn Kartio-collectie, waarin hij de perfecte balans wist te vinden tussen materiaal en geometrische vorm. Eenvoudig maar duurzaam genoeg voor dagelijks gebruik, terwijl het slanke ontwerp verfijnde elegantie toevoegt aan elke tafel. Kartio is een iconisch symbool van Scandinavisch design geworden dat alle trends overstijgt. Volgens Franck was kleur de enige decoratie die nodig was. Het brede, veelzijdige kleurenpalet van Kartio laat perfect zien hoeveel kennis van gekleurd glas bij Iittala aanwezig is. Het gekleurde glas is door-en-door gekleurd, waardoor het glas jaar na jaar de mooie kleur behoudt – ook na gebruik in de vaatwasser.

De serie omvat glazen in twee maten, een bijpassende mondgeblazen karaf en een klein schaaltje.
De glazen en schalen zijn makkelijk stapelbaar, dat scheelt ruimte. Kartio is ontworpen door dezelfde designer als het Teema servies, Kaj Franck. De vormen van het Teema servies en de Kartio glazen passen perfect bij elkaar.
