The Freud 77-604 3/8" Mortise Compression Spiral Bit is a high-performance solution engineered for woodworkers who demand perfection when routing delicate, double-sided materials. Unlike standard compression bits, this mortise-specific design features a shorter up-shear length, making it the premier choice for milling grooves, mortises, and through-cuts in thin materials 5/8" thick or less. By combining up-cut and down-cut action, this bit compresses the fibers of the material toward the center, ensuring a splinter-free finish on both the top and bottom surfaces of melamine, veneered plywood, and laminates.
Built for industrial durability, the 77-604 is manufactured from Freud Premier Solid Carbide and enhanced with TiCo™ High-Density Carbide to provide 2X the cutting life and performance of standard uncoated bits. The bit is finished with Freud’s proprietary Black I.C.E. (Industrial Cooling Element) coating, which maintains a cool cutting edge and facilitates superior chip evacuation to prevent burning and resin buildup. Pro-Tip: To ensure a clean finish on both the top and bottom of your workpiece, make sure your initial pass is deep enough to allow the down-shear portion of the compression bit to fully engage the top surface of the material. A pass deeper than the 13/64" upcut length is required to engage the "compression" action that prevents surface chipping on melamine and veneers.
