The man is standing on a sand dune, holding a rifle on his shoulder. In the background the dune sands are covered with footprints, and further back behind the man is a large leafless bush. Wilfred Thesiger and his men stayed with Muhammad, a sheikh of the Rashid Bedouin, and his extended family for a few days during their first crossing of the Empty Quarter (Rub' al Khali) in December 1946.
