Зима 2022 року. Росія вже не перший місяць завдає шкоди українській енергетиці. Як результат, українські міста раз по раз занурюються в темряву. Одного дня на околицях Києва знаходять труп чоловіка, який став жертвою бездомного пса. Такий висновок напрошується при огляді тіла, поліція кваліфікує справу як нещасний випадок. Але екс-поліцейський Данило Кречет знає загиблого з дитинства і йому чудово відома кримінальна біографія шкільного товариша. Тому підозрює: це не випадкова смерть, а навмисне вбивство. А зброя вбивці незвична й раніше ніде ніким не застосовувалась — спеціально навчена тварина.

Підозру розділяє поліцейська Юлія Сапіга. Молода жінка дуже любить собак і хоче знайти й покарати того, хто навмисне їх тренує на вбивство. Так у темряві, під акомпанемент сирен повітряних тривог починається полювання на пса-вбивцю… Чи, краще сказати, на його хазяїна. Несподівано розшук виводить із темряви чимало таємниць недалекого минулого — загадок, свого часу не розгаданих самим Данилом Кречетом…
