The Setting

After a climate collapse ended the Anthropocene and plunged Earth into desolation for millennia, humanity emerged resilient and spread across the stars. Fifteen thousand years later, humanity numbers in the trillions, a diverse and multilingual mix of people organized by Union, the central power of the galaxy. From Cradle, Union manages the affairs of the human diaspora, guides those lost in time, and nurtures the steady growth of a true utopia.

At Union's heart, the dream of human dignity has been realized. But you won't find yourself in Union's heart. Just like ripples fade further from their origin, Union's utopian project trembles at the edges. While Union space grows, resistance grows too.

Forgotten stellar empires rise from ancient ruins, challenging Union's utopia. Some hold war banners against a vision they don't share. On the periphery, old powers plot to regain control, while progress's children hunger for more, believing utopia should reflect their vision.

The center holds, for now, but maintaining utopia feels like an endless boxing match. If its defenders don't fight, the hard-won dream will be taken to serve the privileged few. The gentle galaxy would crumble into chaos. At the edges of Union space, battles rage. The iconic machine of this age is the mechanized chassis — the mech — and the new heroes are their pilots.
