Тит Лівій (59 р. до н. е. — 17 р. н. е.), уродженець містечка Патавій (суч. Падуя), був 'першим професійним істориком', тобто все життя займався лише написанням історії Рима, відомої нам під назвою 'Ab Urbe condita libri CXLII' — 'Від заснування Міста. 142 книги'. До нової доби дійшло тільки 35 книг.

Книги ХХХVI–ХL охоплюють період 191–179 рр. до н. е. та містять опис розбрату між синами Филипа V, через який молодшого, Деметрія, було вбито, а старший, Персей, вступив на здобуте злочином царювання, самогубства видатного карфаґенського полководця Ганібала, загибелі в полоні восьмиразового стратеґа військ Ахейського союзу Філопемена, прижиттєвих і посмертних обвинувачень Публія Сципіона Африканського. Також — традиційні розповіді про блискучі перемоги та не дуже вдалі бої римського війська.

Переклад з латини зроблено Наталею Яковенко — філологом-класиком за освітою, доктором історичних наук, відомим фахівцем з історії ранньомодерної України.

Видання продовжує серію 'Бібліотека світової літератури. Антична література', де вийшли друком твори Гомера ('Іліада', 'Одіссея'), Платона ('Діалоги'),  Арістотеля ('Політика', 'Поетика'), Апулея ('Метаморфози, або Золотий осел'), Геродіана ('Історія Римської держави після Марка Аврелія'), 'Давньогрецький роман' та ін.
