Boysenberries (Blackberry Rubus) are a classic and beloved variety known for their large, dark purple fruit, offering a perfect balance of sweetness and tartness. Widely grown across the United States, the boysenberry is especially cherished for its versatility—perfect for eating fresh, baking into pies and cobblers, or making rich preserves.

The boysenberry plant thrives in full sun and well-draining soil, producing abundant harvests in mid-summer. With a trailing growth habit, it benefits from trellis support to improve fruit production and make harvesting easier. Originally developed in southern California, near Anaheim, California, the boysenberry rose to fame thanks to Walter Knott of Knott’s Berry Farm. Today, it remains a favorite among home gardeners and berry lovers alike.

Whether you're growing a backyard berry patch or looking for a boysenberry plant for sale, this flavorful and productive fruit is an ideal addition to your garden.

  • Plants are 2 years, grade #1Boysenberries

Esteemed for their large, sweet-tart fruit, thrive within specific parameters that cater to their growth and fruitfulness. Delving into the nuances of cultivating these berries reveals a process that requires attention to detail and a grasp of their unique needs.

Understanding the Basics:

Boysenberries, scientifically known as Rubus ursinus, are ideally suited for Zones 6-9. Bearing fruits from mid-June to early July, these berries boast elongated shapes and mature to a rich maroon hue. Their flavor is a delightful blend of sweetness and tartness, accompanied by an inviting aroma.

Origins and Development:

Rudolph Boysen, George Darrow, and Farmer Walter Knott play significant roles in the history of boysenberries. This fruit resulted from the crossbreeding of European raspberries and three distinct varieties of native blackberries. Farmer Walter Knott's cultivation of boysenberries at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California, contributed greatly to their popularity.

Ideal Conditions:

Boysenberries demand careful attention to their environmental needs. They flourish in well-draining soil and require protection when temperatures drop below 10°F. Full sun exposure aids their growth, although they also appreciate some shade in scorching climates. Adequate air circulation is crucial to prevent fungal diseases.

Planting and Care:

Planting two-year-old, grade #1 boysenberry plants sets a solid foundation for growth. Ensure proper spacing, usually 4-6 feet apart, allowing the plants ample room to spread and thrive. Regular watering is essential, especially during dry spells, while mulching helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

Pruning and Maintenance:

Pruning is pivotal for boysenberries. Removing dead or diseased canes and keeping the growth controlled ensures better fruit production. Prune during the dormant season, and be cautious, as they bear fruit on second-year canes.

Pollination:

Boysenberries are self-pollinating, though additional nearby plants can enhance pollination and fruit set. Encouraging pollinator-friendly flora in the vicinity can attract beneficial insects and aid in the pollination process.

Comparison to Other Berries:

Boysenberries are large, dark maroon or purple berries with a sweet-tart flavor, a hybrid of blackberry, raspberry, and loganberry, growing on trailing vines. Raspberries are smaller, come in various colors like red, black, purple, or golden, and have a sweet, aromatic taste, growing on canes and being more cold-hardy. Loganberries, a hybrid of blackberry and raspberry, are dark red or deep purple with a slightly tart taste, growing on vigorous trailing vines.

Harvest and Usage:

Harvest boysenberries when they reach full ripeness, displaying their deep maroon color and easily detaching from the vine. Their versatility allows for various culinary uses, including freezing, canning, making jams, jellies, or simply relishing them fresh. Proper storage in the refrigerator prolongs its shelf life.

Boysenberries stand as a testament to meticulous cultivation, offering a delectable fruit known for its versatility and unique flavor profile. By providing them with the right conditions and care, growers can enjoy bountiful harvests and relish the fruits of their labor.

"Outstanding support and a seamless process!"
Great experience with Asurion insurance through Amazon. I wasn't sure how to register my items for the monthly plan, but the customer support team in the chat was incredibly efficient and guided me through the entire paperwork process smoothly. Furthermore, the service I received at the repair shop (Break Fix) was excellent. The whole process was seamless, and I received my digital gift card without any issues, which I’ve already applied to my Amazon account. I am very grateful for their professionalism and how easy they made everything. Highly recommended!"

Received giftcard money to replace my plan-protected malfunctioning motherboard
I've been subscribing to the Asurion protection plan for a while. Recently, an Asus Prime PC motherboard I had bought a few months ago on Amazon stopped working well. I ended up considering filing a claim with Asurion to see if they would either fix/replace it or issue the purchase price money, so I could buy the failed electronics replacement component again for my custom-built PC. I went to the protection plan's website and started the claim filing process but couldn't find the category my failed component would be under in order to select it from the drop-down list. I ended up messaging the live customer service. The chat messaging was somewhat slow, the agent told me they were experiencing some communication delays throughout their systems. Ultimately, the agent was very kind and understanding, and completed the claim filing process for me on her side by asking me to provide the necessary info such as the item's product name, date of purchase, price before taxes, etc. I received a printable UPS shipping label in the email, printed it, and returned the item in the mail. Approximately 2 days later, I received an Amazon giftcard code in the email with the dollar amount equal to the item's price before the sales tax. Then I redeemed the giftcard code on the Amazon page and proceeded to apply the giftcard money to my next purchase of a replacement Asus prime motherboard, and it all worked out successfully. Therefore, I had no issues with the protection plan service and recommend it to others.

Fast and easy but I dont trust the process to be fully automated.
The process was very smooth and fairly quick. The only challenge I had was that the CLAIM status showed complete but I had to manually go look up the status. There was no email or notification it was closed. After manually checking the status, I called customer support and they said since I called in, they would process the payout. I wonder if I didnt call in if they would have processed it? Also, the phone rep said they would issue me a amazon egift card but then the next day I received a email saying they mailed out the payout. Very poor communication but so far the process was easy and fast.

Affordable protection plan and superb customer care
I usually don’t buy extended warranty, but I took a chance and added a 4-year Asurion Protection Plan to my purchase of a Canon PIXMA printer. So glad I did!! After only a year and a half, my printer showed an error message 6800. Cannon website states “Support code 6800 generally indicates a failure with the logic board on your printer. Service will be required.” How convenient for that to happen shortly out of Canon’s regular 1-year warranty (🙄). I called Canon. Long story short…they couldn’t do anything for me unless I purchase a warranty plan from them and they send me a replacement or I would need to pay for a repair. No thanks. I called Asurion and talked to a very nice tech support person. She couldn’t get rid of the error message remotely, so she transferred me to another very nice support specialist, who helped me start a repair claim. Asurion mailed me a box with a lot of packing material, along with shipping instructions and label to ship my printer to them for free. A few days into the repair process, they determined my Canon printer was unrepairable and they emailed me an Amazon gift card that same day for the cost of my crappy Canon printer. They were in total communication via email throughout the repair process. I highly recommend Asurion, and I would definitely purchase another protection plan from them again.
