Tolkien: Maker Of Middle-Earth

This richly illustrated book explores the huge creative endeavour behind Tolkien’s enduring popularity. Lavishly illustrated with over 300 images of his manuscripts, drawings, maps and letters, the book traces the creative process behind his most famous literary works – 'The Hobbit', 'The Lord of the Rings' and 'The Silmarillion' and reproduces personal photographs and private papers, some of which have never been seen before in print.

Tolkien drew on his deep knowledge of medieval literature and language to inform his literary imagination. Six introductory essays cover some of the main themes in Tolkien’s life and work including the influence of northern languages and legends on the creation of his own legendarium; his concept of ‘Faërie’ as a literary construct; the central importance of his invented languages in his fantasy writing; his visual imagination and its emergence in his artwork; and the encouragement he derived from the literary group known as the Inklings.

This book brings together the largest collection of original Tolkien material ever assembled in a single volume. Drawing on the archives of the Tolkien collections at the Bodleian Libraries, Oxford, and Marquette University, Milwaukee, as well as private collections, this exquisitely produced catalogue draws together the worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien – scholarly, literary, creative and domestic – offering a rich and detailed understanding and appreciation of this extraordinary author.

''The excellent catalogue is well worth its £40.'' - The Times

''...a splendid collective effort that offers the reader a beautiful, accurate and at times moving portrayal of Tolkien, the man and the author, But, just as importantly, it successfully captures the complexity and depth of Tolkien's literary endeavour, facilitating the reader's approach to a monumental, many-layered palimpsest.'' - Cercles Journal

''Enjoyable and quick to read from cover to cover, but it is also a beautiful book that begs to be flipped through. Thankfully, the well-researched information that accompanies each high-quality image makes this sort of a la carte consumption not only possible but also satisfying.'' - Western Folklore Journal

''Better than the show itself, with all the things she wanted to include in the show but couldn’t.'' - The Spectator

''This is a near-perfect collection and an utter delight for those who love Middle-earth.'' - Starburst Magazine

''J.R.R. Tolkien fans needs to know about 'Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth' … Incredible … A hefty book packed full of gorgeous, fascinating images.'' - io9

''A compelling and extraordinarily rich account of J.R.R. Tolkien's life and literary history interspersed between three hundred images … Really, you should just go and get this … awesome and lore-packed book. 'Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth' is the book beyond the exhibit, which endures even as the other diminishes and sails into the West. It's sure to enrich any fan's appreciation for Tolkien the mortal Man.'' - Tor.com

'''Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth' is a pure delight, one that I'll return to many times in the years to come. … I have many more books about Tolkien than I do ones he has written, and this is the best of those about him so far.'' - Fantasy & Science Fiction Magazine

''The single best, and best value, one-stop-shop for the visual material associated with JRR Tolkien.'' - The Notion Club Papers – an Inklings Blog

''I can honestly say it is not just a beautiful and important art book, but a critical biographical publication for study and research too. Well done! … A wonderful, and important, book. Don’t wait to get one if you are on the fence!'' - TolkienGuide

Good solid product
Purchased in February of 2025. Very solid item. Use it constantly in our 2011 4Runner and 2017 CX5. This unit attaches firmly to vent fins in both cars. I use iPhone for maps programs and streaming music. When traveling I'm constantly rotating device 90 degrees to use phone in portrait and landscape positions. Unit has shown no signs of losing ability to firmly hold desired position despite frequent rotations. It holds firmly where you place it. Initially I had concerns about placement on dash and blocking view of radio face, clock, MPG indicator, and other displays. Didn't take too long to realize the flexibility of this thing and the many, many positions you can place it due to multiple rotational joints. Pricing was fair. If this ever wears out, I will want to buy another.

Happy with purchase, easy to install, exactly what I needed
For many years, I'd been using a similar item with a wedge-type vent mount that finally stretched out and became unusable. When searching for a replacement, I wanted to try one with a different type of mount and I looked at many brands/types of holders. This one seemed to be the best item for the price ($8.99 at the time). So far, I'm very happy with it. I got it in a timely manner, and it was exactly as advertised. I had no problems attaching the hook to the vent fin and securing it. I use it for a GPS, and since the holder is designed to stand out away from the vent a bit, my device is easier to see than previously and details are easier to read. It wobbles, occasionally, but the holder's not loose, at all, and it doesn't affect my ability to read the device. The frame is barely just big enough to hold my GPS, but so far that hasn't been a problem. The device slides into the frame easily, locks securely, and stays put. The holder pops open at the touch of a button on the back, and the device can be removed easily, without issue.

Prevents me from adjusting the air vent up or down
It's true that it doesn't block the air flow. I had to put it on the left passenger side vent to retain the ability to point the driver's air vents where I want. With it over there, I have to turn my head too far to the right when I'm driving to see my phone, and the passenger can't adjust the vent up or down. Also, phone can't tilt as far left and right as other ones. Good price, unique design, easy to install, feels sturdy, holds iPhone SE fine, and doesn't block my view of the entertainment system.

BETTER THAN A CUP HOLDER
I had a cup-holder mount and it was always falling apart. No matter how it was turned, to unfasten my phone I had to move the spring part of the holder in the same direction that removes the entire clip from the stem of the mount. Of course, I eventually lost the clip. What a bad idea. And, in a 4-Runner, on my cupholder, MAPS sometines got lost and I would have to hold my phone up to the windshield for a minute to get back MAPS back on track. Also not a good Idea. We're not supposed to be handeling a phone and driving so holding my phone up to the windshield is kinda like flagging down a cop. (The 4-Runner has hand-free phone service, as well as some kind of circuitious navigation but it's always lost.) . So, for about $9 on sale, I though I would try one of these LISEN mounts. It works great ! Really. Easy to attach securely but scratchlessly it to my center AC/heat vent and It is infantly moveable. Swing the arm 360 degrees, in and out, phone up or saideways, and tilt the phone to me or the Boss. If I get bored, I can relocate it anywhere along the center vents, or even over to my side vent if I have nothing better to do.. It is sturdy, quiet, easy to clamp in my S21, and release is simplye by pushing the button on the back. Sooo much better that my previous mount, for a third of the price. It might be the best $9 you ever spent. And still worthwhile,if you have to shell out the $18. (But I always try to avoid paying full price for anything). Enjoy !

Usable but average, with only basic build quality and stability.
This in-car phone mount is fairly average overall. It’s easy to install and works for basic navigation needs, but the build quality isn’t particularly impressive. The materials feel a bit ordinary, and stability can be an issue on rough roads, with some looseness over time. It’s usable, but not outstanding.
